I had to quickly replace the factory stereo in my 1990 62 this weekend. Searched all over here and elsewhere and most of the info was incomplete or consisted of poking with a multimeter and figuring out the speakers by trial and error.
I'm an electronics technician and can do it quite well, but didn't have my Fluke with me on a trip to the inlaws...what was I thinking! :p

I took all the info I compiled, sorted it out, and installed the stereo with only one wire change. I've included a pic of the stereo plugs and wire position in case the color changes thru the years.

And if anyone can confirm or deny that 60s use the same scheme, then it can apply to all 60 series (or can include corrected info for all).

Hope it helps someone!
Comments or corrections welcomed.

Not sure if the Hayne's/Chilton's have this (Think they have the stereo wiring? Maybe not, they're cheap...) but you could have saved some trouble and just asked beforehand. Or looked in the FSM that is around here somewhere online.

I'm an electronics technician too and had the joy of doing the stereo a few months ago when I purchased the money pit that is my 1990 62. I'd have just pulled out the radio real quick and let you know. Haha.

At any rate, that's a nice, clear diagram. Good job on that. I'm sure it'll come in handy.

I know my FSM diagram didn't match the wiring on my other 62 and the FSM and Haynes manual were 8hrs away at home. Strapping a portable iPad player to the console wasn't great on the ride up as it barely played above the noise of the MTs on my new build. Found a nice Alpine on sale at best buy and tried to make the install quick before heading home. Posted a question on my build thread, but no takers on a Saturday nite :).

I know there are a lot of folks that aren't electrically-inclined that could use a quick reference, so hope it helps!

Wondering if the wiring is the same on the 60 vs the 62?

Not sure about if it matches 60s as well; if someone can verify its the same or let me know what is different, I can add it to the thread.

Hi, Fj-60 had no rear speakers. I believe I had to run new speaker wires as the 60 had one wire and had the speakers direct grounded to the doors. Mike

Should add this also. Back of my stereo for ID purposes, two plugs with one larger than the other (also shown with pictures of the plugs).

The FSM didn't match your other 62? Weird. I wonder if it was Frankenwired?

Post a pic of the install?

Also, if that a double din Alpine in the above pic? It looks fricken huge.

Could be. IIRC, FSM is '88 since Specter was out of '89 yr FSMs. And coloring could've faded over 20 yrs.

That pic was actually the stock double DIN stereo.

Here is new single din Alpine with HD radio, blue teeth and all that jazz :)

Yaesu 8800 will fill the hole below it.

Nice. I put another Kenwood in mine...someone had already taken out the original radio and put in an old Alpine (like, old). So it already had a nice plastic cubby in it.

I threw an amp and sub in and voila...1000% upgrade in sound quality. Of course the electrical system hates the amp (but it hates everything so...).

That two plug wiring was started in 87 in most Toyota vehicles and was standard in most until around 2003 when the steering wheel controls came around. The 1987 60 series should have it. The 80 series does. My 2000 LC has a different plug system. 98/99? But many other Toyotas used it past 2000. I'm using a 2000 Tundra head unit and amp in my 89 FJ62. It was plug and play. Even has a spot above the glove box to mount the amp. I not even sure why have one of those adapters to plug into the factory harness but it tells what every pin is used for. Those are under $10 on Ebay all the time. I think I got my years ago from Circuit City for $6. I looking for the wiring harness side of the plugs to use single DIN units in my 40 series. I know it's a little wider but most the opening have been hatched up aready so figure when I repair them I'll just make the opening wider.

Not plug and play with my 97 FZJ80 stereo:
Must have changed pre97 on cruiser stereos. My 03 tundra has the same plug as the 97 stereo pictured.

The factory wiring does plug into the head unit but into the amp on the preminum sound system. A head unit will not work without a amp. The head unit plug change I think in 2000. Not sure if it across the board switch in 2000 but later nineties amp work with all head units from the same era but not later. The same is true with most Toyotas shortly after 2000. My 2000 LC works with the LC amp as well as other Toyotas from around the same time. While upgrading the radio in my daughters 94 80 series I noticed there were two sets of wiring harness plugs. One set by the head unit and another set on the right side of the glove box where the amp was mounted. Preminum sound got a amp and there is a harness off the amp to plug into the head unit. On those without preminum sound the plugs behind the radio were used. I have bought a certain type of sound system off Ebay. The only ones I buy are preminum sound. One picture of the back and I can tell the difference.

Like I say I using a Tundra sound system with a 6 CD changer. First one I used was a early ninties Toyota two piece combo that the CD skipped all the time. Then I switched to a single CD out of a Tundra and finally now the 6 CD. I have eight or nine factory units laying around I could plug and play.

Your 97 unit has the Anti Theft System. I have stayed away from them becasue you need the VIN from the vehicle it came out of and have to go to the dealer to make them work in another vehicle.

So if I understand correctly, my two plug harness should plug directly into a factory amp on some newer models, and said amp will have the single plug harness that will plug into the pictured head unit??

Got any pictures of the amps?

I wrestled with this on my 60, I ended up running all new wire, if your upgrading the head unit, might as well upgrade the wires as well.

Good luck with the install!

Thanks, new unit is in and this thread was the result of the findings. I'm not too worried about upgrading the wiring now. Its more about volume than quality in a 62 with MTs :).
Just trying to compile some info and get some ID info for later Toy stereo swaps.

I do have a pair of kickers for the rear going in soon and probably steal the Polk front speakers from my other 62 to go with them :). Almost bought a little sub to cut into the tailgate too, but then came to my senses!

Thanks I appreciate you posting..this just helped me out a lot. Trying to install a new stereo after someone stole the last one, completely ripped all the wires out and left a mess

60 and 62 plugs are completely different. Upgrading a head unit in a 62 is super easy both with wires and mounting. Upgrading a head unit in a 60 is a PITA.

It's been a while since this thread has seen some attention, but I am a bit confused about EOE_overlands labeled photo. I have a 1988 FJ62 with the same two white harness connectors. My wiring is the same, so assuming that it is stock. Someone at some point installed a now outdated aftermarket stereo with what looks like a Metra wiring adapter (two white plugs to one black one for the back of the stereo. My question is that black should be ground, but on my Metra, black goes to the stock brown wire on the larger of the two plugs and Left Rear + goes to where ground should be... It doesn't make much sense to me that EOE_overland shows that last rear wire on the other harness and ground on the smaller harness, anyway. But, my stock colors to align with EOE_overlands photo.
Obviously confused... Any thoughts as to why the aftermarket adapters don't align with colors on this? Should I just ground black from the new back-of-the stereo harness right to the body behind the dash and forget about tying into the harness?

I installed my stereo this weekend on my 1989 62. The pictures in this thread were helpful, but with a few differences. The wire colors in my dash do not match the wiring diagrams in the FSM 100%. The black wire in the pictures did not lead to a ground, but it was a lead wire to the rear speakers. I ended up using the stock Alpine harnes and ran power to the battery positive terminal and grounded to the chassis in the passenger A pillar. His pictures were correct for the ACC/ Ignition lead. That’s the one I could not figure out, but finally did.
