60 Series Intercooler (1 Viewer)

for those that don't mind a bit of fab work, I found an intercooler that fits in a 60 series (kind of). From a Saab 9000 (I think... it was the large 4 door hatch-wagon thing). The intercooler is wide enough that the inlet/outlet are on the side of the stock 60 radiator. However, that's where the easy-ness stops. To fit this, I had to modify the battery tray (turned the battery 90 degrees, and sunk it into the fender a bit), move the coolant overflow. I squeezed it in between the radiator and the A/C. But, now the grill won't fit. More importantly... the vertical support under the hood latch doesn't fit... So... need to make a custom grill that also supports the hood latch (it bows so much, it's hard to get the hood to latch).

all that work, and 200 yards onto the freeway, 4th gear pedal to the floor, I split one of the industrial heavy duty hoses (15# of boost).

But... it fits. Kinda.

Don't want to hijack or anything, I think this is totally relevant.... New to turbos so I have lots of questions--When selecting an intercooler, do you basically have to look for one that can flow as much air as the turbo can put out? What considerations do you have to take into account when selecting one, besides the basics of fit into the vehicle? Gifu, how did you select this one?

also had to scoot the horns over, and move the hood support.

I chose this... because it fit. It's pretty big... bigger then the Volvo intercooler that Andre has on his 4BT-powered FJ55.

But... being that I blew the hoses, I can't tell you how it works.

Why behind the A/C condensor? I've always thought the proper order was first intercooler, then A/C and lastly the rad. You want the coolest air over the intercooler because that gives the best "bang for the buck".

because that's where it fits. If my A/C wasn't fully charged, I'd rip the condensor(?) out, and build custom lines to stick it somewhere else. Besides... the A/C doesn't exactly get hot.

Coming from an A/C type person, I think you'd be surprised! I'll bet the intercooler is negated by the A/C condensor when the A/C is on. It may even harm (heat) the charge air temperatures! If you have the opportunity stand next to an operating window air conditioner one time and see how warm the air is that they put out and remember that a car A/C unit is roughly the same capacity.

Brian- I'd be interested to hear how or if the intercooler makes a difference with the 6AT.

And I was under the impression as well (from the diesel list) that running an intercooler anywhere but out in front wasn't a good idea since it cannot cool the air as effectively.

I have a 740 volvo intercooler up front. It is right behind the grill.
I wanted the inlet and outlet pipes to be on top but that was not possible so they are both on the bottom. All I had to do was weld on two brackets and cut some steel away (which was rust anyways) so that the pipes could fit.

jzilla... do you have A/C? Do you have picts? I had one of those intercoolers, and I could not make it fit.

OK, so per Cruiser_Guy's recomendation, I tried to fit the intercooler in front of the A/C.

See updated picts above.

And guess what? _much_ easier. I guess it was one of those can see the forest for the trees (strike while the iron is hot? don't look a gift horse in teh mouth? no no... that's not it) situations. When I originally tried to fit this thing in, I saw how much wasted space was between the radiator and the a/c. so, naturally i tried to make use of that. i ended up having to trim the lower valence (spelling?), and removed the hood-catch-support thingy (which, btw, is really important. the hood will move around alot, and it hard to get it to shut, without the support thingy).

well, to make a long story short, this way was much easier cause I don't have to fab brackets for the a/c. but i did have to fab a hood-catch-support-thingy (5 minutes). And I think I can trim the plastic grill and fit it back in... though it will take some major trimming, and a new way of mounting it. But it should fit.

Where are you located? I'd like to come by and see how it looks and see if I want to be that radical to the bodywork and supports. I could certainly use an intercooler but I'm not giving up my A/C to get it. I run near 1150/1250 too often pulling up hills here in Guatemala and a few degrees cooler/denser charge air would be nice.
