So I've been shopping for a new FJ for a while and due to my geographical location the 6 speed has been about as elusive as a unicorn. I've test driven a couple automatics and liked them, but I wanted to be sure before I bought one. I test drove a 6 speed 2011 Tacoma and really liked the feel of it so I almost ordered a 6 speed FJ based on that alone.

The other day I finally tracked one down and went for a test drive. I can't quite put my finger on it exactly, but I didn't like it. For starters the massive TRD Cue Ball shifter was bulky and felt clumsy. The shift patter felt vague and somewhat mysterious. I know the knob can be changed and I'd probably get used to the shift pattern, but what really threw me was the fact that the shifter itself was vibrating aggressively from side to side the entire time the engine was running. I've never seen a stick vibrate that much. My '82 FJ 40 and my 79 Porsche 924 make this stick look like complete garbage.

I don't think the sales guy had gone through puberty yet and I'm fairly sure he didn't know what a manual transmission was, so he wasn't much help. So my question to you guys is, is this normal or did I get behind the wheel of some anomaly? I've never owned an automatic in my life but if this is what I should expect from all the 6 speeds I think my decision is pretty well made up.

There must have been something wrong with it.
Mine doesnt do that.

Normal vibration in trans case stick but no movement whatsoever in either one.

HTH

I drive an 07 6speed and I can honestly say mine has never moved like that in the 3 years I have owned it! Something is wrong with it!! DONT let that 1 ride bother you and your hunt for an FJ with Real transmission... My $.02

Manual with full time 4wd is rediculous, 6 speed in a sports car yes, lunch box no.

6 speed here, no vibrations. It's my toy and DD, 75k miles, two trips to Moab and Colorado. I'm happy but I think I might go Auto next time. Manual in FJC gets rear lockers included with Off Road package. No hacking, no purchasing. It was a monetary decision for me.

I have a 6-speed in mine and I am extremely happy with it. I don't get any excessive vibrations and the shift pattern is just fine for me.

"TRD cue ball".................

Perhaps it has a TRD quick-shifter. We just recently replaced one of those levers because the top portion and partially broken loose from the lower. The lever is two pieces with a rubber isolator in between.

I have a 6-speed and have used it for 3 years, and I love it!

i have the 6 speeds biggest pile Ive ever had ..2 tranny 3 clutch they have a BIG problem with the bellhousing and throwout bearings, and to this point no cure. Trust me i know im on my 4 bearing .... There is the pdm kit for this that is going in now but this s*** is getting old fast !!!!!!! bought this for reliability and ive never owned a vehicle that been in the shop so much ....to fix this I just bought a lx450 ...lololol at least I know what im getting into this time;)

The idea with a 6 speed, is there are no gaps in gearing as the older toyotas' used to have... the FJ's ratios are close enough so you do not end up with a dead power/speed between gears...

I like my 08 6MT. No probs and I'm running a TRD blower. Every AT I've ever had has been higher maintenance and cost.

I have an 07 6-speed and love it, no excessive vibration and pulls hills on the highway in 6th at 75mph no problem.
