All,

Does anyone know if Toyota dealerships do a transmission fluid exchange or simply do a drain and fill. My 2013 'Runner has 127k gentle miles on it and it's probably time for a fluid change in the transmission, transfer case, and differentials.

On edit, I've discovered that my local Toyota dealer does a fluid exchange that removes 95-98% of the old fluid and replaces it with new. Just draining the fluid only changes about 80% of the fluid, from what I understand. It's pricey but a new transmission is more- so! Even my dealer's service writer says changing hoses is a waste and he has some customers with 300k on their original Toyota hoses.

I guess longevity is one reason we buy 'em.

I don't think there's a consensus on when or if to change it. The FSM seems to say never change it unless you're using it for extreme duty. I did swap the fluid in my last 4Runner at 200k miles and 20 years old. At that point I was doing timing belt #2 and also replaced essentially everything rubber under the hood. Belts, hoses, plug wires, etc. It was sort of a top to bottom preventative maintenance. I also did both rear wheel bearings. <- That part is a PITA. I don't know whether changing the transmission fluid really did anything of value that I could tell. Just seemed like I should do it.

On our GM HD2500 - it has an Allision automatic with a filter and requires 15k mile oil changes. And it only lasted 80k miles before it failed. So... maybe changing oil doesn't help if it's a s***ty transmission?

Anyway, I'd probably do it around 200k in my 5th gen if I keep it that long. I'm only at 50k now. I don't know how most dealers do it or if Toyota has a special service tool for flushing the fluid out. On the plus side - you practically never hear of an A750F transmission going bad or having problems. I've personally never heard or read of one going bad. I'd guess it's happened at some point, but it seems like no matter what you do - they're very durable.

good luck.
