Our first real snowfall of the year- I love this stuff! Anyway... drove the wifey's 80 to work this morning, since it was in the garage, whereas my 60 was out in the middle of a drift!

I'm constantly impressed by these trucks. We had freezing rain for the past two days, and now 5" of snow on top of the ice.... but the 80 trudged through without so much as a single slip and slide.

I did encounter one issue. On the way in the (BRAKE) light came on briefly - about 6 seconds or so. Could this have been ice build up or snow accumulation on the rear axle causing tension on the cable or something? No the e-brake was not engaged. In fact, I was accelerating out of a off camber icey corner.

Anyway- Toyoda should re-name these things sno-mobiles.

PS- Firestone Destination M/T's worked awesome!

Oh, and we're expecting 10" more today! WooHoo! I need to get my sled out for the pups.

Low fluid level in the reservoir makes this happen. Being off camber probably did it.

Doc-

I was going to PM you and ask if you got any of the stuff. About 1/2 inch of ice in KC, supposed to get 2 in. of snow this afternoon. So nothing like you've got.

I know the Destinations are good in the snow, but how were they are the pure ice/water? Are they okay with being siped? Have you felt a need to put studs in them?

Well, like most tires, on pure ice they aren't as good as a studded tire. However.... here's my side by side analysis...

In my 80 on ice (which we had up until the snow yesterday- ice sheets in every parking lot) you can romp on the gas pretty hard and get very little wheel spin. Corner at near normal speed and still get around fine. The full time 4wd is just that good.

In my 60 (which rides on identially sized destinations) you romp on the gas and you will pivot if not in 4wd, and if you are in 4wd, you'll get a lot of wheel spin before you start moving.

So on a conventional 4wd (the 60) they are not nearly as capeable as on the 80. But still a good tire. I have not gotten them siped, but would probobly help the 60 out a LOT of I did so. I feel no need to have them siped on the 80.

They are great in the snow/mud/dirt/rocks/whatever.... just not as good as a studded tire in the ice.

ditto on the low fluid....could be: low fluid, wearing/worn pads (need more fluid to squeeze calipers further, cooler temps could cause enough of a volume differnece if your close as well....Snowing now here in MA...I'm driving my lifted VW with diesel with 4 snows. Not the same as the 80 but pretty capable for going to and fro.....

I'm sure it's the low fluid issue. I have a not so slow PS fluid leak which I've been trying to put off until spring to repair. I've been topping the fluid off every two weeks or so, so I"m sure it's time for more fluid.

Thanks guys!

We got ya' beat here... 30" of new Powder in town! Got high centered on a driveway birm (in my defense it was a 4' birm....) this morning and had to dig out a bit....

Went cross country skiiing last night to the coffee shop and snowshoed a local trail this morning at 0700.... Keep the snow coming!

Don't think a PS fluid leak would affect the reservoir level on the braking system....

Might be time for new brake pads, though.

Damn, brain fart. Sorry- good catch.

We had the same conditions over the last three days up here, these trucks seem to just take it in stride.
