Made a fair amount of progress after dinner tonight...buttoning up the center arch. The replacement sheet metal as well as the original stuff is so damn thin, I kept burning through. I really had to dial it down and do multiple tacks to get it all secured.

redneck bug rotisserie.

yes I welded the brace in too low and had to cut and jog it to check the clearance with the new floor pans.

Left heater channel out. what a crapshow. Went well, but it is a ton of work.

floor pans FINALLY in. Tacked in for now, will get the final welds when we make sure the rockers line up.

For the record, VTCruiser60's measurements were dead on for the collar fitting. Whodathunk. :flipoff2:

Sorry for the crappy cell pics.

Check out the first pic, that is only SOME of the spot welds that have to get drilled out. The rear quarter had been repaired once and while the originals were spot welded to the rocker (heater channel), these ones were not. So alignment might be a pain. Thank god it is a race car and not a resto.

Chassis paint for a race car? We are going with rustoleum hammered for $15 a quart.

There will still be grinding back and welding, so we wanted something that would not require a gun every time we had to grind it off.

Painted with a brush in my yard. Touched with rattle can where I could not reach.

and the silver is because the car will be mostly white, and we want to cut down on heat inside the car- so light colors should work.

Nice weekend progress boss. Good call on the rustoleum....there is no telling how long it will be in the elements until we get the body finalized and prepped for cage work.

Maybe we can get the spots welds off on Tuesday night. What, are there only 282 left to drill out?

I went through and read a little more in the hibbard book (baja bible) and realized that I have have to grind back the frame horns to reinforce the welds and make more support for the pans. Oh well. Thank goodness for rattle can touch up.

Also, I put the rear spring plates and sway a way 28MM bars you bought from chirco, and they slid in like buttah. All new poly grommets are on, but I have not indexed the rear bars yet. Test fit the new welded and reinforced rear arms and triple shock mounts (though we will only use two) and they will work great.

You will have to weld them up, as my little " baby food" 110 mig is not up to the task. They are better than 1/4"

Dangerously close to reassembing the rear end, though not with the correct stub axles for the bus CV joints.

We should have the trans mount this week, and we can toss the vanagon 6 rib trans in we picked up from a sponsor for SHORT money.

You have a pm for more parts.

i'll have to watch this build.
love the hood!!! i need to cut mine to look like that ;)

The race hood I got new on craigslist for $70! Had to drive a few hours to get it, but it was worth it.

There is no shortage of drivers, there are shortages of people who want to build it, and help fund it.

:)

It will be at the farm for a bit for all the cage work. Might have a runner 1600 motor in it as he will need it for the rear cage. As long as it does not go over the course...

VTcruiser60: I hate you.

Albee- I totally never emailled you back! did you get your orion? Do you still need a hand? Give me a call.

a little progress

Rear seams welded, rear arm mounts cut for travel.

mock up for the rear, triple shock mounts just tacked, we have to wait to see where they are mounting on the cage, after the body is back on.

New Sway a way spring plates, inner and outer poly grommets, and 28MM SAW torsions installed, shorter than stock to allow a larger tire. The holes in the spring plates allow toe adjustment, and a third is drilled when that is set. Arms have had a beef up kit installed, and new poly swing bushings. Mounting ginormous allen bolts not in yet, as this is just for mock up.
