Watched a youtube video on that. It looks pretty straight forward. I've done on a LC once. If I do ball joints and tie rods at the same time is there anything else which should be replaced? What parts should I order? I see different odds and ends on the toyota parts store.

I can't think of anything major that would come off with the ball joints. Definitely do the lower ball joints if they are suspect at all, inspect tie Rod ends, CV boots, upper ball joints (or get adjustable UCA's if you are lifting), inspect the brake components. Toyota 4 Runner Org website is a great resource, not too much support on mud for this platform.
 
Computer wouldn't be a bad idea as every car is OBD2 now.
 
I think Autozone will scan it for free,you can buy an inexpensive code reader online and it will give you some idea what is wrong with it without getting hit with a $150 diagnostic fee.
