SILVER Star
This 4th of July took us to the mining town of Creede, CO. This town went bust when the sliver value dropped significantly so the town became an outdoor activities mecca. Tourism is now the primary source of income for the folks. Lots of wheeling, camping, rafting and biking to be had in this area of the San Juan National Forest. I'm looking forward to returning to this area for some more camping and wheeling. This trip was more of a scouting mission for future trips.
We camped off of Forest Service road 502, near a creek, about two miles north of Creede and drove into town for the 4th of july festivities and couple of meals. My old co-worker, Vic, followed us up there in his motorcycle from home and camped with us the first night before heading West. Unfortunately for him, our first night of camping took us into the trail system by couple of miles and his bike didn't appreciate the rocky terrain. He did great and there we no accidents but lots of close calls! We aired down his front tire and that helped a little bit.
Colorado weather this time of the year is about thunderstorms, rain & sun all in the same day. Day time temps were in the 80's and night time temps were in the 40's. You can get a deluge, then five minutes later perfectly clear sky for the rest of the day.
We took a tour through the creede underground mine and museum and it's definitely worth it.
Also, attached are pdf files of the route we took in case some of you are interested in taking a similar trip.
