The rot under the chrome trim was letting water leak on to my passenger, so I finally decided to take it off and do some repair. After "carefully" removing the chrome trim I noticed that the windshield was not securely attached, there were actually holes in the fat black glue holding it in.
Since the rain is coming and I'm tired from just painting the house, I took it over to Bill's Glass here in Medford. $185 and 18 hours later, I have exactly what I wanted.
A real windscreen put in with a rubber gasket. NO TRIM! YAY!

The test will come next week when it starts raining again.
p.s. FOR SALE: lightly used 1985 Toyota Chrome windshield trim.
