I'm looking to do a tdi vw diesel swap in an 87 4 runner. Has the ifs and w56 tranny. I'm not sure if the tranny will hold up to 300 ft lbs of torque at 1900 rpms

Was thinking about a 4l60e, for any of you with the similar year vehicles what transfer case did you use and any front drive shaft issues?

I have a 1980 Pickup with a 4.3L Vortec, 4L60E and NP241 transfer case. The PO did the swap. The front driveshaft was lengthened about 18". The rear driveshaft remained stock. The only issue I had with the front driveshaft was contact with the bellhousing with passenger side compression, but I also had a high pinion front diff at the time.

Always dream of doing a TDI swap if the occasion every presented itself. Good luck with the swap!

Thank you. This ifs to t/c sits pretty level. Both diesel swaps I've done on a 60 and a 40 had to have the bell housings ground down and/or a smaller diameter front ds made. I can't grind a tranny oil pan! Lol

Have you considered an R-series 5-speed? Much stronger trans the W.

I have. Currently looking for one.
