40 series headlights

As i was playing around with it this weekend in the driveway, I noticed one of my headlights is dead. Ive read a few posts on this board about 'upgrading' to different lens/bulbs etc..

what do some of you 12v guys run for headlights?

i've see two popular swaps, one being just replacing the bulbs with those sylvana silverstar bulbs, or you could get those skookum headlights like the tlc icon has, with the turn signals built in.

nah..ive got some pretty funky turn signals on the 40 that Rob put in...I like 'em! nice and flexy.

Oh right, the little resto shop they have beside it. Jody's cruiser (winner of best in show at last years Cruiser days) was sitting in there for awhile on consignment.

I got some cool trucklite h4 housings at Freightliner in Calgary a while ago for about $31 each. I love shpping those big truck places. They are open 24/7. They even came with bulbs.

Or better yet, you could be very cool and retro and use candles, big fat ones. You can get them at church sales. However you would have to keep the speed down to 10 Km/h at night...

Crappy tire carries the H4 lense and bulb for retro fitting. I think they were bosch, can't remember. Saw them in flat container with two lenses and two bulbs 80 bucks or so.

And likely not DOT or SAE coded. At least on any I have seen in stores to date. Hella's are SAE stamped.

80-90 bux for a frikkin headlight? they have gold filaments with an unobtanium coating or something?

That for the Pair, which is a pretty good deal, I have priced out both Hella's and Bosch, at the local parts shops, and they are pretty much 80 bucks each!

ughh..apparently I havent bought head lights in a very very long time.

Well you can still go the cheap route and not buy H4s, just go to Canadian tire and buy the sealed beam, but then everytime the bulb blows, you have to buy the whole light and pay more than the bulb of the H4s.

Hmm, I never looked for that. I understand the need on the JDM rigs for sure. Old Bj60's don't even get noticed by inspectors. I think anyhow......

As I don't have to worry about compliance inspections I doubt anyone would notice.Same with on an old 40. But a RHD...

Thoughts anyhow. How worried would you guys be if your headlights didn't have SAE on them and you drove a Canadian market truck? Anyone ever pulled over?

I wouldn't be worried. My other car, a Ford Focus, has European headlights and tailights swaped onto it along with European front and rear bumpers which don't meet the Canadian governments idiotic 5mph crash laws and I've never been hassled in 4 years of driving it.

I recall minitrucks being targeted a few years back by inspectors in BC, and frames being checked. I would suggest BJ/HJ60's are going to go down the same path, debending on area, inspector and "if" they feel the need to target. If "they" are still monitoring this and other forums then for sure, at some point.

However yes, the point is well taken. Put none conforming (but still quality "E" coded) lights in anything that does not say "pick me, pick me"...and you are likely fine.

I had used Bosch for years, not even thinking a common replacement light for sale in the market would be an issue.

oh i see now. I've been in hiding that long that I didnt realize these 'new' ones are a 2 piece. So 80-90 bux initially, and then if a bulb blows, just whatever it is for the replacement bulb. Course if a rock smashes yer light.'yer buggered.

So, noe to change topic ever so slightly:

I used to have some wire mesh guards that popped onto 3 tabs that protected the lens (somewhat anyways). I still have the tabs, but the mesh guards have long since disapeared. Canuk wheel would probably carry them I guess eh?
