I just had mine done

I had some interior and exterior rust repaired. I have a guy who cut out the rusted sections and welded new steel in. Thee were spots in the hood and the quarter panels as well as the sides. I didn't address the doors. They were rusted at the bottoms and I didn't want to mess with them at the time.
I went to Earl Scheibs pain and body for a paint quote. They were to finish the body work. Do all the prep and paint it with their #3 paint job which came with a 6 year guarantee against chipping, peeling or fading. $438. This was to include painting the bumpers black.
The manager called me and told me it was ready and looked great.
I showed up and they had not done the extra prep. He apologized and said they would re-do it. A couple days later he called and said it was done.
I showed up and they had done the prep and repainted everything but the top. The top had lacquer checking in one spot. I also found some runs on the hood and on the sides.
The manager said to let it cure and they would fix it. I came back in a couple of weeks and they took it back in. Repainted the hood and fixed the lacquer checking in the top. Now I had runs on both sides of the hood and still had the splashes on the side.
The manager told me that he was going to turn it over to their master painter who knew everything about painting and would take care of it.
I called the number and after almost a week I spoke to the district manager. We arranged a meeting at a different location (closer to my office). I showed him the problem areas. He told me that he would take care of it. He called me a day later and made an appointment for me to bring the cruiser to the closer location. We again went over the problem areas. He assured me that I would be happy when they were done.
He called me two days later and said it was done and he had personally checked on it. I met him at the shop.
Now, for 400 bucks I never expected it to be perfect and it isn't but it looks pretty darn good and I've got at least three coats of paint on it.
So to summarize a very long story: You can get it done pretty cheap if you're willing to stick with it.
That price only included painting in the jambs and the doors themselves.

my64fj40 - how are you going to handle painting the exterior hinges and hardware?

They have already been powdercoated to match. All bolts, nuts, etc. are going to be stainless.

Other pieces, such as doors, hardtop sides, etc. are still in the painting process.

Exactly the reason I didn't sub my painting out. Your lucky to have done business with a willing company, most are not.

Nice cruiser BTW

The rust is minimal (above the tail lights and under the driver side jump seat) and I would like to get a nice paintjob so would it run about 3 or 4 grand?

I had my '82 FJ40 that had minimal rust painted inside and out for $3500 (4 years ago) and it came out very nice. I did some of the work myself to save on costs but did not want to deal with or screw up the body work and paint. Check the link in my sig line (under "82FJ40") if you want to see some pics of what was done to my truck.
