Can anyone give me an estimate on how much it would cost to get my Fj-40 painted and have some minor body work done?

do it yourself $
pay someone $$$$
macco $$$
kid around the corner $$

asking abroad question and getting good answers, priceless

just paint it yourself.
im 16 and a painted my fj40.
All u need is wet and dry sand paper masking tape, newspaper a cheap spray gun and compresser, 500ml of primer and 4L of paint what ever colour u want and 8L of paint thinners. It cost me just over $300 in australia and $80 was the gun the other 220 was the paint. and an area with not 2 much wind or dust that can land on the paint.

If you get someone else to spary it 4 u it can cost from $1000 for a really s*** job up 2 $4000 for a really good one.

Fj40s are made for bush bashing so u dont want anything 2 good beacuse when you go off-road it will get pinstriped by branches rubbing past it.

If you're talking about an 83 FJ40, it would be insane to put a maaco paint job on it. Body work can mean anything from a dent to a half tub replacement. If you want to send me some pix, I can give you a rough estimate.

Paint if a very broad question. It can go from a couple hundred doing it yourself or having Macco do it or many thoughands depending on where you take it to have it done. Is this a restoration or something that you are going to use to wheel?

I sprayed an old 45 I had with a rattle can and slowly did the bodywork over time. This way you can take your time fixing dents and still have a decent looking driver. When you're done sanding and pulling for the day just spray some more rattle can on it. When you're happy with the body then spend as much as you want on the real paint job. I had a 40 painted for $500 down the street but I'm sure you could spend as many thousands as you want for a showroom job.

You'd be surprised how nice a rattle can job looks from 20 feet going 50 mph!

Hopefully within the next year or so I'll be able to get mine painted. I want a top of the line paint job for my frame-off, no holds barred restoration. A few months ago I was in a restoration shop that deals with anything from antique cars to later corvette restorations. I asked for just a ball park idea of what a paint job might cost -just stripping as appropriate and paint - no body work. Obviously this was also a vague question as they couldn't look at it but they did know what an FJ40 was. How much? $5000 - $8000 with the range depending on type of paint I wanted, how many coats, etc. I'm guessing I can do better but probably not much for a top quality job.

Anyone know of great paint shop in the southeast with landcruiser experience? All of the local paint and body places just want to do insurance work and won't even talk to you.

realistically, a straight fj40 good paint job will be a minimum of $3,000.

As texx said, a 1983 in almost any state of condition deserves a $3,000 paint job, not maaco.

where the hell is Shane Walters!?

A straight paint job should include:
painting fenders, aprons, windshield frame, doors, top pieces, hinges (doors/wind frame), hood, bib, bib hinge, all separately, then assemble.

finish of paint, paint quality, steel replacement all add over and above this number. US labor fees for paint and body are high and restoration work demands better skills than most collision paint places possess.

War Eagle dude... How about posting some pics?

At some point this spring I'll have my 40 in your town... I'd love to stop by and take a peek.

I've been going to ask how folks are painting. Logically, I would want to prime and paint all parts separately and then assemble - but how are folks handling the external hinges and screws which are also painted? I have been thinking maybe prime and first color coat unassembled then assemble for a second coat?

bama782fFj40 - Check out my build thread in my signature line for pics. Not much progress since what is shown but I finally got my engine, tranny, and TC set in a few days ago. I'll add pics of that soon.

Do a search. This as been discussed before and prices are all over the board. Cost depends on extent of rust repair and body work and type of paint and location/state.

Mine cost between 4and 5k do paint and do rust repair. I did the dissassembly of the misc. items.

hey ed I was looking around auburn when I was going to get some one to do it It was going to be 1100 for the body and another 500 for the hard top. that was the middle grade price he said it would last a long time. I am betting you would not have to spend more that 2000 dollars. the place across the from breez way.

Look at the pictures I posted. A complete frame off, sand blast, lots of body work and repaint for me was $5,000. I had to buy the paint and the clear at $1,000. Plus I bought all the parts that need to be replaced. The bodyshop will put it back together.

Replace rusted sections.

Here is some pics of the body work I did...

I replaced:

1. Metal under the doors on both sides.

2. The rear sil including a new c - channel

3. The rounded c-clips on the rear of the cruiser.

4. A few little spots that I welded up.

About $300 in material

Sandblast and a Zinc Rich Epoxy Powder Coat Primer. $2000 for everything on the cruiser, every little piece.

Then I put a Dupont Corlar Primer down, because it adhered to powdercoat very well.

Before Corlar after some body finishing $Evercoat filler, maybe $50, just for some minor inperfections.

Corlar Primer about $50 a gallon

Did two coats, lots of sanding between and after

And then Imron. About $200 a gallon IIRC
