I've sold my LC's and looking for a 200 LC. The looking may take about 6-12 months. So, I'm thinking of buying an interim 4 Runner to hold me over, purchase the 200 and then re-sell the 4 Runner without losing much in value. Is this sound logic?

No. Been there done that. Taxes and fees, etc. That being said, this is a hobby and costs some amount of money.
 
Roger that. I can concede the taxes fees dbl registration as the cost of doing business while waiting on the favorable deal for the new 200.
Just needing a compass reading on a 4 runner holding it value for 6-12 months. That being said, "who knows?", right?
 
I need to drive something in the interim other than a rental car.....Hmmmm, maybe that works....
 
I'm thinking a low mileage 5th gen and selling it for essentially mileage + 2000 for a grand less.
Just my thoughts....

Lots of stories about selling vehicles for breakeven / more than they were purchased during the covid / post covid era, but not so much in present day.

Personally I'd go for something that has already seen most of it's depreciation as a way to minimize financial risk. Typically that's an already old, higher mileage vehicle where it getting a little bit older with a little more mileage doesn't make much of a difference. Of course there is the risk of repair, so choose the beater wisely, and repair DIY if possible.
 
Just bumped into this. All things equal you lose a bunch buying a vehicle, then sell and buy what you really want.

Why not set your mind on a 4Runner, perhaps TRD version and take that route all together?

Or more proactively search for a LC200? May have to significantly drive or fly around and try a couple, but would expect you still be ahead on losses buying and selling another vehicle in the mean time.

Obviously do what you like, just seems a potential expensive route. And how will you find a 200 in good shape without going around and spend the money on it?
 
All good points 2021. After further review, I'm expanding the search for the 200.......
 
If you plan to travel and spend the money, you may want to select an accident free one owner which has lived outside the rust belt.

Also would think a seller would send you a bunch more picture of things like the underbody, frame and KDSS rust status, before you actually preliminary agree on a price pending a satisfying F2F review and test drive.
 
I talked to a dealer (not Toyota) today that said they would reimburse flight ticket with a done deal. (I'm sure that cost is factored in somewhere?).
 
If I had to do this again, I would also consider a 16+ LX570 and get the CBI front bumper clipping the massive X grill and making it look good as well. Obviously tastes differ. Just saying as it has all the LC200 capability and could be a well maintained couple year old for a relative decent price.

Agree, you will get less of a deal with them so you are paying one way or the other.

I once almost bought a 2004 E500 in Miami which had all the features on it I liked, while living in Houston. The approach I took:
1) Get more info, whatever that is to satisfy it is worth flying for in the first place
2) Only agree on a price in principle pending a satisfactory test drive. Get that in writing.

In the end I did not as I negotiated between several dealers in Houston a good price on a new 2004 E350 with Airmatic suspension and extras I wanted, similar to the E500 yet with an engine a little less thristy. So I think it would have worked out, just make sure you have the test drive condition in there as a vehicle pulling, poorly shifting, poorly braking, odd noises are all reasons to try something else.

I would expect after 2 to 3 tries you get one which you really like.

That one is nearby me in Sugarland, West side Houston. Looks interesting. Could not find a history like free carefax on the website but did not try much either. By the way when it has a carefax you only get the insurance of mileage and accident free when you actually purchase yourself the carfax excerpt. I would always do as sometimes a vehicle has been in a crash and gets quickly repaired and put for sale before carfax catches up. This way you are covered.

Did you see this one? I have a white one but also think the grey looks great. I do like the black interior more than the light beige/bright wood color trim combination. That maybe just what you like, tastes differ which is a good thing.

Ok, found it, notionally looks OK including the carfax.

Edit - This Duggy Garage did quite a bit of work. Did not know of this place, apparently specializes in Toyota Land Cruisers, so could be perfectly fine. Work done and repairs could be a good thing. Assume the "engine oil cooler" is the "transmission cooler".
  • Valve cover gasket(s) replaced
  • Water pump gasket replaced
  • Fuel tank removed and reinstalled
  • Radiator replaced
  • Engine oil cooler line(s) repaired/replaced
  • Transmission serviced
  • Transmission fluid changed
  • Differential fluid flushed/changed
