Why the heck doesnt Toyota put a 4 cylinder in these too? Less powa but better mpg. I would buy one if they got 25 mpg.

The FJC is heavy. Really heavy. Almost 500# heavier than, for example a Jeep Wrangler. The difference in mileage between the Wrangler 4cyl and the Wrangler 6cyl is about 2MPG on the highway (266 vs. 304 mile range) - city MPG is virtually the same (240).

Less power for no gain. Toyota knows what they're doing.

So put it on a diet. Its crazy that these days you cant buy a new 4x4 that gets more than 20mpg. A 4x4 that is useable. We need a Scion XB type of 4x4.

WTF? First, a 4 cyl isn't always going to garner the best mileage. Take, for the sake of this argument, the chrysler mini vans. They offered one with a V6 and one with a 4 cyl. We had the V6, and my uncle had the 4 cyl. He obtained worse mileage than we did. It's because the engine had to work much harder to move the mass.

All that 4x4 gear train is heavy, causes friction and power loss. Plus, to be a useable 4x4, the frame/unibody must be up for some neglect.

Dont you guys remember that there USED to be many damn good 4 cylinder 4x4s? A 4x4 highlander weighs 300 or so pounds less than the FJ Cruiser yet gets 21-25 mpg. Cut down on power a bit and you have a constant 25 mpg.

I didn't know a highlander could be considered a 4 wheel drive ;). I'll take a 6 cylinder just because I couldn't get a turbo diesel.

Well highlander isnt really but weight is weight.

Get a highlander then ;)

Seriously though... not every vehicle can be for every person.

Highlander is not designed to go off-road.

It is a great 'take me to the mountains to go ski vehicle' but the
frame doesn't have to be as strong an neither does the drive train.

19 to 20 mpg is reasonable considering my FJ80 was getting 12-13 mpg.

unless it was diesel, I wouldn't own another 4 cylinder.;p
I had one in my nissan 4x4 truck, and the truck was light. It didn't have much power at all. It was a five speed, but with the hills around here, the fifth gear didn't see much use.

And lightness has some disadvantages. I slid off the side of a muddy road once and had to drive over a small tree to get down.

Give me a landcruiser any day.

I'd even take an fjcruiser with 6cylinders over that nissan:)

I hear you on the diesel !! Lots of torque.

We had a 4x4 Nissan also years ago with the V6. That was a decent truck. Problem was the gearing was too high for serious off roading.

My friend in his 22r Toyota PU could climb things the Nissan couldn't....

One of the issues when comparing the Highlander and the FJ is where the weight is. The FJ has a lot more weight in the drivetrain, wheels and tires. Which means lower fuel economy.

Only real soultion is a small turbo diesel. An FJ with a turbo diesel and a little better visibility woudl be incredible. Can't imagine what else would get me to trade in my current FJ.

And i can live with 19 mpg right now. Don't see any viable alternatives.

the 05+ tacomas still have a 4 cyl option.

the biggest you can go is a access cab though, from toyotas website, a 4x4 4cyl access cab Tacoma is only 2-300 lbs lighter than the FJ.

I wasnt trying to say that a highlander is actually an off-road vehicle. Obviously its not. Frank, dont matter where weight is located. Weight is weight. A 4 cyl diesel is no help unless you have 10 gears. Otherwise you will run out of speed just the same. Same with Turbo. No real help "in the rocks". Landtank, how old is your wifes 4Runner? 1988? 20 years later we should be able to do better.
