Hey guys,
Just took my '13 on a 4,200+ mile road trip. As usual, the LC handled everything with ease. Comfortable, safe, and easy to cruise on the highway. I continue to be amazed how well the AC works, even in 115+ temperatures.

Drove from Texas out to San Diego for a training conference. Then up the coast to San Francisco/Bay area for some college visits for my son. We drove up Highway 1 and loved it, although we definitely were in the fog for much of that span.

Coming back, we drove down I-5 to the Los Angeles area for another college visit, then back east through Arizona and New Mexico.

Highways. Beaches. Deserts. Mountains. California drivers. These rigs just deal with everything with ease.

Only three downsides to the trip (none related to the LC) :
1. Got another windshield chip on the first day of the trip, just 4 days after replacing the windshield. (Had another chip that ran quickly across the entire windshield, so had just replaced it before the trip.)
2. Had to secure my weapon at the Arizona/California border, since California has ridiculous state gun regulations and doesn't recognize any Concealed Handgun Licenses from any other state. I was glad to stop on the AZ border on the return trip and get situated again. :)
3. Found out that it's time to upgrade my radar detector. No tickets! I have a ValentineOne, but it is 8 years old. It needs an upgrade to deal with all of the newer lane detection/assistance crap that some of the newer vehicles use. (These systems leverage radar that is very similar to police radar, so it sets off some detectors.) I really noticed this around newer vehicles and definitely saw trucks along I-40 showing the same characteristics. I will definitely stay with ValentineOne, but mine just needs to be upgraded to current specs. V1 --- That's essential gear on my LC.

Happy trails (and highways) !

Glad you had a good trip. That's crazy about having to leave your gun in AZ. Are you allowed to openly carry in the vehicle at all, or you have to have a CA license? Being from GA, this makes absolutely no sense to me. ;) Do they actually have places along the CA/AZ border where you can leave your weapons?
As for radar detectors, I have the Escort Passport Max 2, and while it's a little better than my 7 year old Bel, I'm not really sure it was worth the upgrade. That being said, I wish I had just gone with the newest ValentineOne. The thing is, if they're using Laser, and your detector goes off, you're pretty much screwed anyway. I do love Waze though...it's saved my butt many times.

You can legally transport a hand gun in California if it properly locked and unloaded. Ammo and weapon cannot be near each other. One in trunk and other in glove box or vise versa. Locked hand gun needs to be in a case. That how I would carry one if needed to. No more than 10 round clip. Anything more is banned. For long rifle, it needs to be in a case and does not need to be locked. Same rule as handgun regarding ammo. ammo and rifle cannot be in same case. There is no open carry only concealed permits. That is law I know of and I am not expert either.

Spot on, Atwalz.

Before entering California, I just had to unload it, then place the gun and magazine(s) in separate, locked cases which were in separate areas of the vehicle. Once I crossed back into Arizona, I got everything back together and resumed my normal routine.

Doing similar trip in August. Austin - Santa Fe - Vegas - Tahoe - San Fran - LA - San Diego - back to Vegas - Santa Fe - Austin. Will have the same gun problem but I have 2 Gun Safes. Also if stopped in California and asked where your going you need to tell the Cop some where other then some where in California. Like if stopped in LA your on your way to Vegas. Something in their law that you can't legally transport in a car even if like described unless you are in route to or from a gun range or you are just in the process of traveling "through" California. Figure about 4k miles.

movie stars and politicians made those rules - go figure

Just wondering how any days did your trip take?

We were gone 12 days; stayed in San Diego 5 days but we were on the move the rest of the time. It's a solid 2 days to San Diego (from Fort Worth area). Drive up Highway 1 (between LA and San Fran) was pretty cool; it would be even better on a sunny day. Adding Vegas and Santa Fe will be nice. I-40 across New Mexico and Arizona was pretty plain.

Enjoy your trip, and give us a summary when you're done!

Some pretty basic pictures, but reminders of a good trip. California.trip.2015.1038.webp G0017783.webp G0018335.webp G0064065.webp

I've done 2 different 3,000+ mile trips. It's where the 200 really excels. Especially if you add some time off the pavement.
