Used to install gears for a living. Hire a reputable shop to install them for you. VERY easy to grind your rig to the ground if done improperly. Also remember that you will need to break them in like you do a transmission/motor. 500 miles, and change the oils...off you go!

They are not that complex to set up. But you do want some experienced help the first time..

It is not rocket science..

But it is technical enough, and the costs of improper set up are so high, it only makes sense to have a professional do it.

Regearing is not a cheap exercise. You best bet might be to buy some used differentials from an FJ62 (factory 4.11) and run those. I have purchased used differentials for as little as $50. Look for and FJ62 part out and you are good to go.

BTW-4.11s in a 60 are the PERFECT match for 33 inch tires. See my sig.

What is the best way to figure out if the PO has already made changes to gears?

I just legalized (thanks Mudrak! :grinpimp: ) my Cruiser after 6 months of being deprived and did a test trek of SF to Flagstaff (planning to make it all the way across in May) this weekend. I really stuggled at elevation and incline. I thought the tired 350 could be the cause but this thread has me thinking I may have the wrong gears. I run 32's and a 5 speed.

If you have stock sized tires, you can mark the tire with chalk and have someone count the number of times the driveshaft rotates in a full rotation of the tire. If it rotates just under 4 times you got 3.70's, if more than four, probably 4.11's or whatever number you count. Not sure how different tire sizes will effect this.

If one tire remains stationary, the DS will turn twice as fast..

2.055 ish turns per single revolution of the tire..

I have been running 33's on stock gears for a few months now with good results. I have a set of 4.11's from a 62 I have been thinking about installing. Today the guy at the driveline shop said I wouldn't notice much difference. Is he just displaying his Cruiser ignorance or should I pay heed. Those of you who've done this: is it worth it?

Did you tell him the stock gears are 3.7? You will notice a difference. I put 4.11 in mine and it is worth it for sure unless you just drive around all day on the highway. You will get your low end torque back. Try driving up a steep hill offroad now in 4H in 1st.

I just made the switch myself. It is worth it. The differance was the same as installing an SOR "RV" (what ever that REALLY means) cam and three angle valve job on the head. Or, in other words, the switch to 4.11's had the same feel as a cam and valve job.

I think I may have said 3.83:o

Yeah, the steep hills are a little spooky sometimes. The work to do the 4.11's ain't cheap.

Barry, if you've got the whole third members it's something you can do yourself without too much difficulty. The front will take the longest, best to combine with a front end rebuild (if it's time) since you're in there anyway.

Thanks Cameron (and to all who responded). Greg has filled me in on doing it myself. I probably will go that road. I'm dealing with some workspace issues at the moment. I really want to lock the rear. I think I'm getting stuck in some spots I shouldn't be. Maybe I just need to learn to drive:D

Right, more torque and acceleration, but less (Speed/RPM) is a better way to say it.

So i would need Two 4.11 Ring Kits, and Two of these as well....

That's $706.00 at SOR - Wont be doing that for a while.

Well, you could just swap in a set of FJ62 axles - 4:11 and they will bolt right up.

Don't make this any harder than it needs to be.

Mike

Now is the time to think if you are going to put in any kind of traction aid in your diffs too...

When I changed to 4.56s, I tossed in a rear locker at the same time :D

Would you have to change brakes systems to do that?

No.

Or, instead of complete axles, you can just swap the chunks out.
