4.11 carrier to 3.71 housing, no problem?

Gents,

Got a quick question here. My friend wanna lease his spare 4:11 3rd member to me so i can have a feel wether 4:11 is good enough for my requirement or i must go for the nest lower ratio. My question, is this a bolt-on job? Meaning, remove the stock 3.71 3rd member assembly and slap-in the 4.11 and go? Or, there are things that I must look into first?

Yep, drop in and go. As long as its from a 40 series or 60 series it will work.

I go back and forth between the two, I currently have the 3:73s on the 40 right now, pretty much for better road manners and keeping it in the beach cruiser mode, but the 4:10s work better when you get of the pavement or the beach

True. But a new pinion flange is cheap (~$35 at CruiserOutfitters), and they come in different sizes to adapt to your present driveline. Plus, the pinion seal on the new diffs probably needs replacing anyway, so why not put on a new flange with a fresh seal surface?

Hi gado. Are you considering swapping the thirds on both axles for your test? If not, and you only swap one diff, when you use 4WD, the diff's will deliver the two different ratios to the front/rear tires. Could lead to driveline damage, so be carefull.

As Hobbs stated, don't put the truck in 4WD if you only swap the rear third. If done, your transfer will go "POP".
