I was nosing around under my spare 80 this week, (trying to find an electrical fault that was eluding me), and noticed this:
See that shiny ring on the shaft? It's not supposed to be there. There is a mating worn out spot on the harness cover next to it (now taped up, roadkill fashion). There are supposed to be two harness attachment points on the frame for that harness on either side of that shiny ring, but they left the building long ago. I zip-tied the harness, near the connector, at the body, taking up the slack.
This is a JUL/1995 80. Just for laughs, I checked my DD, a JAN/1995 80, and it had the same failure point at the shaft, but not quite so pronounced. The OEM harness tiedowns failed on that one too. I was lucky to get to both before the wear had progressed into the individual wire insulation.
I then checked my NOV/1994 and the harness is tied in a different spot, due to the placement of the O2 sensors in the 2nd gen 80s. There was no possible problem there.
I'd recommend checking your O2 harness, near the prop shaft, for wear; if you see it on the shaft, it's eating through the harness cover. I'd guess this is the same harness routing for all the 3rd gen 80s: JAN/1995-EOB/1997, Land Cruiser and LX450.
