The 96-98 are good trucks. Coworker purchase a 01 Sr5 v-6 and it seems to get better gas mileage then mine back before it was converted over to more agreessive tires and shocks.

The v-4 2000 is also not bad. I would bick one up myself if I could ever find one they are getting 20 in the city 27 out on the highway.

If in need of JDM modifications, I usually have something from here in Japan. Link is provided in my signature. I am a big fan of the 3rd Gen! Very nice trucks.

I'm looking for a dog/cargo barrier on a 05 4runner... there was no OEM version sold in the USA. Just wondering if it was an option over there.

Well, I found a 98', Limited, 4x4......went to look at it and lo and behold.....it had a rear diff lock. You can't get much luckier than that. It needs a fair bit of maintenance to get it up to snuff, but I think it's a solid truck (I took it to a Toyota dealer to get looked over also.)

I can relate. I just got the very same thing this past May with the same goodies, and at 6'4", I have to be careful as well. But it's the best 4Runner I've ever had (had 5 prior to this), got it with just 68K, and look forward to modifying a bit. I think for the most part, 4Runners got a Rodney Dangerfield thing happening in terms of respect as good trail vehicles, so I applaud everyone here who has one, whether original, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation trucks, it's all good. Wheel 'em, keep 'em visible, and keep it going that a good off road Toyota doesn't have to have "Land Cruiser" stamped on its fender. Rock on 4Runners!

P.S. My favorite 4Runner was a fire engine red 1986 model that was open at both ends on 31" tires that just couldn't be stopped. The engine let go at 212K. Dammit, I shoulda rebuilt that 22RE...

I just picked up a very clean 97 SR5 with a 5-SPD and the E-Locker. It just turned 100K. My only issues is at 6'5" my head hits the roof where it is lowered around the sunroof. I have been driving an 85 SR5 and it had more head room and was easier to get into.

I can't figger out how you guys can get over 20 mpg from your 3.4-liter trucks/4runners.

I have a 1998 Tacoma Limited, standard trans, completely stock, and from one gas station to the next with nothing but an on-ramp, empty interstate, and off-ramp between the gas stations, I just cannot squeeze any more mileage out of the thing with the cruise control set to 70. The average elevation is pretty damn flat at about 4000 feet (eastern Utah between Grand Junction and Green River), maybe that has something to do with it. If I turn on the A/C, that drops the mileage to 19, and cruising at 75 mph also costs me 1 mpg.
