Today I finally got around to using the 3M headlight lens restoration kit that I bought like 9 months ago at O'reilly's Auto. I think I paid around $15 but amazon has it cheaper.

For those of us with the older style glass lenses, the dull fogging and yellowing effect isn't an issue, but most modern cars have the plastic lenses that for some reason or another tend inexorably toward that frosted shower stall effect.

My wife's 2005 Sequoia is/was just such an example. Here are some before pics:

The kit itself is drill bit with a velcro covered base and a series of replaceable sanding pads. The process is simple: Using your home drill, run the 500gr paper several sweeps over your lens (I used 2 pads of 500 per lens), followed by the 800gr, followed by a wet sand with the 3000gr pad, and finish up with a coat or two of the 3M polishing compound (that smelled a lot like turtle wax to me).

Pretty simple really. As a first timer, taking time to actually read the directions and trying to be meticulous with the car that carries my children, and taking random breaks for wicked air drum solos, I think I got both lenses on my wife's car done in ~30 minutes. I did have enough supplies left over to do a half assed job on my DD which I did in less than 10min though.

Conclusion: I'm not ready to call them as good as new, but those lenses look a damn sight better now than they did. I'll call it good for $15.
The over all light output didn't seem to improve as much as I had hoped though. I think it's time to look for some different bulbs now.

Thanks for sharing. I bought a cheap kit without the drill bit sander and it wasn't very good. I have the 3m kit on my to do list.

Best thing to do for this is wet sand the lights with 600. Purchase a clear coat kit and adhesion promoter from your local auto body supply shop. Apply the adhesion promoter on the plastic lens. Then spray your clear coat. You'll never have a fading issue again! The yellow and frosted looking plastic is actually the UV coating on the headlights. When it starts to break down it turns that yellow/frosted look.

Good to know. Thanks.
