What's up y'all? I"m new here, but have been listening in for a couple of months now. I'm looking for some advice and direction from those who know. I recently bought a 88 Fj62 with a 145,000miles on the dial for $450 and a tow bill. It has some wheel well rust and the bumpers are folde in half, but rather than that it's pretty straight and everything works. Sounds good so far but upon getting it fired up I was greeted to what sounded like a midget with a sledge hammer coming from the engine bay.:censor: So I'm heading toward a MAJOR overhaul. I was wondering if you all could help with who to go to as far as an over haul kit, camshafts, and maybe a direction I oughta go. I'd Like to squeeze a little more out of the engine as far as performance withot giving up reliability or ha ha gas mileage> So any help or advice is welcome THANKS!

4 choices come to mind quickly....find another 3FE and drop in or do the 2FE, find a short block 2F and add your fuel injected head to it.

some will say V-8 others will say diesel 4BT

cheapest would be to find someone with a 3FE and just swap, last one I bought was $350 and that was with the transmission

Is doing a 2FE that performance and milemuch better age wise? Is it as easy as using the 3fe top on a 2f bottom? I'd love to go diesel but for rigt now at least I'd like to stay within a budget and stay toyota.

Is doing a 2fe that much of an advantage over a 3FE? is it as simple as using the Fe top on the 2F bottom?

I just had a 2fe built for around $3,400. add all new hoses, belts, dizzy, plug wires, plugs, egr, etc.. (Pretty much everything under the hood ) and im up to about $4,000 +/-. there is some minor fab work to make everything work but it is fairly simple. check out tonkotas write up on the 2fe Toyota Trails Engine Swap

Cool. I'd like to stay withe the stocker if I can. I'll be primarily using it for around town/ weekend cruising, maybe a road trip or 2. If any of you all would have advice on where to score a good overhaul kit, and maybe some machinig or parts tips to add a little umph to it, it would be appreciated. I've read alot of the FE power threads so I know the expectations. Just thought maybe there's a little more to do if you tear it down. Has anyone used the Jet ECU reprogram?

The 2F-E doesn't burn any less fuel than the 3F-E. I have a 2F-E, wrote the article (patting myself on the back) and I like it a lot. Get a cam from Delta Cam and ask for PN KC859 (262 advertised duration.

Building a 2F short block is less expensive than the 3F short block also. That was one of my main focus' when I did the project.

Good Luck

EDIT: I just realized that it has been in there for 3 years now!! Damn it time flies!

Arron, why is this true? Not doubting you, just wondering why?

I definately want to cam it, lose one or both convetors(with bigger tubes) and maybe port the intake and exhaust. Has anyone tried the JET ECU program And is it worth it? If I stick with the 3FE I don't know wether to do a clean up bore or go ahead and do a 30 or 40 over. Any thoughts?

I was going to, but it is sort of limited to what they will do for you and they want a lot of money.

I'll bet, if you are trying to do this on a tight budget, that you can get away with honing the cylinders/new rings and polish the crank and new bearings. Stab in a cam and new/ground lifters. Do the exhaust to one cat from a Dodge truck, 2 1/2" out the back and call it good.

If you really want a ton of power, for the money you can have a nice SBC setup with EFI of some sort and a lot more power potential than the 2F. Or a diesel, but I don't know anything about that.

I like the 2F-E for what I do, stock gearing and 31's to go camping and light off-road. Even loaded camping I can keep up with traffic pretty easy on hills, which we have our share here in the INW. I currently am running a stock cam and an adjusted AFM.

A Ron, what was the price of the Delta cam # you listed and did you source lifters from them too and how much?
Thanks

Hey old man!!

Last I called the cam was $60 (I think) if you send yours in, plus lifters which shouldn't be more than a couple bucks each to have re-ground. Its pretty high on my list of stuff. Right after getting a McNamara gear...

Mark W probably has a more current price since this is the cam he frequently uses.

Yeah I thought of goin'SB and I don't have the jingles to go diesel yet. This is my first cruiser and even though I haven't got to run it more than around the block a couple of times to make sure the tranny worked I think its a neat piece and would like to give it a go with its stock guts. Is that cam your talking about an RV grind? ANd is it a re-grind? Thanks again for the help

I believe that they build them up if needed and then grind your cam. I have a spare cam I'm going to send in and swap out with ground lifters.

RV grind is a generic term. Most RV cams are advertised for low end grunt. Well, the 2F already has that in spades. I think that the performance cam the MAF sells is the 262 duration cam.

Well thanks for the input guys. I have a pretty good idea on what I'm gonna do & try with it, I' just waiting for the lovely OH weather to make up its mind. I'm sure I"ll be asking some more gone over questions in the future beings this is a new vehicle to me.
