I finally pulled apart one of my older 3B engines sitting in my shop, my goal was to clean up the head and use it on my 42 series (really needs a new head). Well once I pulled the head it had the typical cracks in the pre-cups as well as the typical cracks between the valves.

So I decide it was time to try Geoff Walsh High Nickel head. I had heard from someone else that bough from him that you can get a bare head or a complete head and the price was pretty good.

After talking to GW they told me they can no longer get complete heads, only bare heads for 3B (non 3B II). So it appears as it might start to get a little harder to get good aftermarket head for 3B's. I am continuing my research and will post any updates.

Cheers,

Michael

Why not look at repairing the cracks? Go see a machine shop, get it welded. Then maybe they can heat treat to remove the stresses.

My bet it is worth reparing these heads.

David Bj70 is selling a set of precups.

200$ (can) .... or the same price of GW (with the shipping + custom tax (How much are they for a US Cruiserhead from GW?))

make me an offer !!

If I remember right the after market high nickel head that I got from Geoff Walsh a few years ago was actually from a place called "ALLHEAD". You might want to see if you can contact them direct.
I'm glad I got my head and my daughters head already!

Yes "Brownbear", the heads CAN be welded and I've done that on engines that I did not intend to keep for years but it is NOT as reliable as a new head and since the 3B's are already prone to cracking heads why would you want to use a repaired head that's weaker that it was originally? I'm with TLCruiserman on using the aftermarket head!

I believe Greg Reimer in Saskatchewan (Canada that is) who is on the DTLC list had a few new 3B heads that he got as mine stock. It's worth a try.

Craig.

FWIW the factory head has been upgraded and can be had for a little over $1000 IIRC. Still a bare head but an option for now if the Australian well runs dry. I guess we should start stripping the old heads before we throw them out. There's one in the metal bin right now.

I just spoke to Mark at Allhead, and he says no issues at all supplying 3B heads. I did not ask if they were high nickle, or price, as the phonecall was for another item...however thought I would pass this on.
