i have a 1985 Canadian bj70 with a 3b. one day this past winter it would not start and it being my third vehicle i thought i would just wait till spring to get it running (very cold where i live). so went out today to try and start it, charged batteries, then cracked the primer pump nipple and gave a couple pumps and about a cup of terrible black fuel came out? kept pumping and returned to good fuel color, then changed the fuel filter. went to drain water separator but only clean fuel came out(i think). then pumped the primer pump again until consistent clean fuel flowed. tried to start and it cranks but not even trying to start. seems like its not getting fuel, any ideas? thanks, im new to diesels

pretty sure mines been disabled and now operates with a cable( would i be correct in thinking that? its the thing that makes engine turn off?

Yes that's correct, is the cable doing it's job, have you checked any leaks in the lines, injectors etc or even at your hand pump, are you sure you bled it properly, are your glow plugs working? try using the "mudsearch" feature, really a great tool.

The list could get pretty long, that's why i suggest mudsearch in the previous post
While you are at it you may want to revisit your sedimenter, disconnect the 2 hoses and unbolt it from the firewall, unscrew the plastic cap and pull out the unit, look inside and see what's at the bottom of the cannister stuck to the walls, you may be shocked.
I drain mine twice a year, and always get clean fuel coming out the drain, last week I pulled it off took it apart and inside was about half a cup of rusty paste stuck to the inside wall. If you have access to compressed air blow into the line that comes from your tank, this should free up anything stuck at the pick up, take your fuel cap off first. At least you'll be starting with a clean system up to your fuel filter

its not a fuel issue, cause it started with some ether. pretty sure my glow plugs are not working and its still cold up here. oh well looks like im gonna be learning about the glow system next!

I have been trying to find a picture of the sedimenter on the Canadian 1985 BJ70 on the forum, but to no avail. Would you mind taking a quick snap of where it is? I don't know when the last time mine was cleaned :S

Here is a picture from my 85' parts truck, the sedimenter is between the wiper and power steering, bolted to the firewall, note your fuel lines, one runs from the tank, the other runs to your fuel filter.
Disconnect the electrical connection, disconnect your fuel lines, remove the two bolts from firewall, bracket and sedimenter will come off as one, pull back the rubber boot, the white plastic you see is threaded in there, I used a pair of needle nose pliers placed against opposite tabs to loosen it, unthread it.
I just used spray engine cleaner, shop towels and a long screw driver. If you have compressed air blow the line back to the tank (take your fuel cap off first), to clean anything off that might have accumulated at the pick up in the tank, re-assemble, bleed and you are good to go.

If you need glow plugs give Radd a call, he sold me mine last year, he's much cheaper (hope he dosen't read this) even with shipping than your Toyota dealer, with proper advice.
