I bought a 1982 BJ60 a couple of weeks ago. It's a fairly low KM unit (250,000 original Km). I know the 3b vibrates alot at idle, but when I let of the throttle from cruising speed the whole truck sounds and feels like its going to rattle apart. It happens from 2300-2050 rpm. When I reapply the throttle it goes away. Is this just the normal compression braking sound and feel, or is a motor mount shot?

Thanks,

Mike.

Have you checked to make sure your u joints aren't seized up. I suppose it might be a motor mount . I had a similar problem and it ended up being a u-joint

I was thinking somewhere along the driveshaft/u-joint area too. The vibration coming after taking the load off the driveline from taking your foot off the throttle makes me think that way.

No, the driveline is in excellent shape. Checked all that already. It's definatly the coming from the engine itself. I would assume then that this is not a common noise/vibration from the 3B. I'll have to check the motor mounts next I guess. I was thinking of flagging down another BJ60 in town and asking for a ride in his/her rig, just to get a comparision.

Thanks,

Mike.

Raddcruiser sell good and cheap engine mount. Ho ! did you check your exhaust line... maybe it hit on the frame ?

But for sure, the 3B make a lot of vibration !

Another stab in the dark, is it possible that the clutch was recently done and the pressure plate or disk are out of balance? If it's internal engine stuff I'd be concerned. I've never had a 3B that vibrated so bad that the truck felt like it was falling apart and I've had or been in a few.

It usually is the left side engine mount that goes, from being stretched up all the time as the engine torques (I believe being saturated with diesel all the time too if your primer leaks also hastens it's demise). When the left side lets go, the engine will lift under throttle, and the fan will hit the shroud.

Sure sounds like driveline (your pinions are okay too?). Drive shaft balanced, u-joints okay, splines ok, pinions ok...etc?

Ok, well thanks for the replies. I'm sure I figure it out sooner or later.

Mike.

I had a car one time that had tires out of balance. Ie the weights were there just not installed correctly The car would drive great except for a certain speed at decel. It drove me nuts for a few weeks til I exhausted all other possibilities and had the tires rechecked for balance. might not be your problem but it can't hurt to check.
