My 81 BJ needs a new exhaust system. Since everything is pretty much rusted out, I was thinking of replacing the whole works from the exhaust manifold back. Is there any advantage to going to a larger size pipe to help the engine breath better, or should I keep things as they are? Current pipe is 2"OD.

Bigger is better. Same for the muffler, make sure they keep a big one on there unless you're turbo'd in which case skip the muffler (if Washington allows that). I run 2 1/2" pipe and no muffler on my truck and my daughters truck.

don't forget the flex pipe.....alot of shops do.

Where does the flex pipe go. My basket case of an exhaust doesn't have any flex in it. Probably why it keeps breaking.....

Might post this question on the International cruiser board here--more folks with factory diesel experience there. But Cruiser_guy's advice is fine (and he's of course a regular lurker on the Int'l board).
