Of course tire choices are individual. One size does not fit all. Mine came down to MTR's or the Trxus. The two things that sent me down the Trxus path was the weight rating (3650 lbs./tire 10 ply) and the width. I went to National Tire and Wheel in Wheeling WVA. and had them pull the two tires for me to look at and measure. The Trxus was a little wider tread tire and along with a little better mud traction (my opinion) I was looking for a bit of floatation. Oh, BTW, it's some experience to see 3 or 4 floors as far as the eye can see of Swampers, Baja Claws, wheels etc. Too bad my pockets weren't bigger.
Curran - Sounds like you are looking for something more for rocks. I put the pic in to illustrate the tire size (height and width) of going from 285 to either 315 or the 35's, let alone going to a 36. At some point you just have to pull the trigger and live with it; or take the shoe leather express.
Junk - FWIW, it's a Millermatic 251 with a Spoolmatic 30A gun for aluminum. Hence the dual cylinder rack and a bottle of Argon and a bottle of 75/25.
Thanks Dan the Man! Nothing worse than a dusty crane. :

Bill,
Thanks for the photo. Your right, I need to decide on something and move on. And a large affordable, street-able tire that does well in the rocks is what I’m looking for. That’s a heck of a lot to ask for. Last night I placed an order with Tirerack.com for a set of five 37 x 12.5 R 17 MTRs. I like the E load rating of 4080 lbs, the price was right and I have a few rebate coupons for Goodyear that will help offset the damage. Because tire rack has a warehouse just north of here, shipping is dirt cheap.
Now to figure out the right backspacing for a 17-inch wheel...
My 305/70/16 Goodyear M/T's on OEM steels are about 97 lbs each. This tire is the Mil-spec directional tire that was replaced by the MTR. I expect that the weight would be similar. FWIW, the "shipping weight" on the OEM steel wheels is 41.3 lbs each. They are shipped to the dealer with a cardboard "hat" that protects the outer painted surface only.
The original M/T was a directional tire. The MTR is not. In addition, the M/T was a blackwall, no white letters. I really like the original tire and I was keenly disappointed when they were discontinued.
