hey guys, i wanted to get some feedback on an engine swap im thinking bout for my 76 fj. i recently was handed a 92 camaro with a working 350tpi and a th700r4 tranny. does anyone know what type of difficulties i could be faced with during installation? right now i have a 76' 350 from an el camino in there with a stock 4spd trans. some help on this would be awesome, thanks.

Lot and lots of work on that one. So I'll get that TPI out of youor way.

Seriously though. You'll need a new adapter, trans cooler, some lines to go with it, maybe a new cross member and drive lines plus a whole bunch of little stuff.

i am about to do an auto swap into my existing 350.. Youll need a FUel pump, Tranny Cooler, Shifter, wire up all the computer and everything pretty much like the way GM did it.. adapt a Speed Sensor to your T-case.

Headers are the same, Pullys will be different and waterpump will be "long", it may make you move the engine for cooling issues. All kinds of fun stuff to think about! Search for 700r4 their are a couple of great install threads..

You shouldn't need a speed sensor, unless you are using a 4L60E, the 700R4 doesn't use one.

But I think the EFI system still needs it for optimal function.

I think not, unless the ECM came from a vehicle with a 4L60E, and you are now using a 700R4.

If the donors came together, there shouldn't be a speed sensor.

mabey woody should chime in here but from what I remember, he tried an aftermarket speed sensor and it broke so he ran without and hasnt had any issues..... is this correct??? mabey my memory fails me...

I wasn't refering to the trans needing the speed sensor signal. I was talking about the EFI system on the motor. :D IIRC the speed sensor is part of what tells the EFI system to go into closed loop. It was also part of the timing control system in that when the vehicle is cruising down the highway the timing is ramped up and the fuel is leaned out to improve fuel economy. I understand that a 700R4 does not need computer control.

getting ready to do the same to mine

I have an '89 TPI, it had a 700r but I am going to use a C4 with an adapter, only 20.5" long. However all I read is conflicting in regards to the speed sensor, but it seems to me after rereading the book 3 times, you need it for the engine and not the trans. Mine has the problem of being a MAF unit and not a speed senson unit to begin with. Most people tell me I should switch to the speed sensor. Time will tell, I have the MAF and I don't have the speed sensor. Can you guess what I will try first?

I am running a speed density LT1 and 4L60 (not "e" last of the 700r4's)

The donor came with a VSS but I deleted it from the programming and did not install one. I have had zero issues at all.

I cannot speak from personal experience on the MAF motors.

You could contact Jagsthatrun.com JTR about MAF/Speed Sensor issues. Mike knows about these things for the most part.

ok, i'll chime in. yes you do need a speed sensor. some will run, but some wont. you can limit your rpms without one, and on my MAF tpi it would stall at a stop without one. howell-efi.com has a speed sensor that you can splice into your existing speedo cable for about 80 bucks. they also have very good fuel pumps for efi as well as everything you don't need. and, by the way if you are in california, and have a vehicle newr than '75 you WILL NOT pass the referee smog check without one. you must have all emissions equipment from the newer motor and exhaust. all in functional order. believe me they will check everything. i went through it all recently. imo the engineers put it ther for a reason so it will have some effect by not running one. ....or you could just by an older rig....
