... it hits the bumper, bigtime.

Whats the best fix? Relocate the studs? They'd need to go upwards about 1", should be no problem.

I read a suggestion to flip the carrier, but then others said it interferes with the wiper and the small door. Is this true for 33s or only larger sizes?

(I could go play with it, but I'm at my desk working... I can get paid for sitting here playing on mud but not for sitting the parking lot playing with my tire carrier :D)

I got a local fab shop to modify mine to work with the 33x10.5-15's on my truck. Can get photos at some point if you need.

For posterity... the carrier flip works for clearing the bumper and the other door (baaaarely) but DOES smash the wiper.

Pic #1: Shot of carrier.

Pic #2: You can see tire needs to be about 1" higher (is resting on the bumper in this pic)

Pic #3: Note that there is some angle incorporated in the carrier, which explains why the wiper gets squished.

Pic #4: Slight interference between the wiper arm and the carrier bracket when inverted.

Pic #5: Wiper behind tire on flipped carrier.

Pic #6: Same as above, different angle.

So it looks like I'll have to just move the posts. Shrug.

I Just flipped mine, but my factory rims have a different offset.
The other option is to flip and make a small spacer to it packs out the wheel enough to allow the wiper to function.

Take the bumper off....

My HZJ73 came with a funky steel grated tray that stuck out about a foot, where the bumper was supposed to be. That contraption was gone within a day of getting the 'cruiser home, and I haven't bothered making a replacement in the six years since.
Most don't realize anything is missing.

IMO, the stock bumper is just a chrome ornament that reduces clearance, and doesn't provide any real protection. It has the potential of being pushed into the sheet metal in tight situations, likely increasing the damage, rather than reducing it. It might provide some minimal protection in parking lots, but that's about it. This recent thread shows how effective the stock front bumpers are.

I redrilled the carrier since you also will want to move it to the right slightly so you can open the left door. I'll post a pic of mine tonight

Looks like you got the 9.5"ers... lucky. :frown:

Anyway, I fixed it. You all here in 70-tech are a bit more capable than the other boards here, but here are some pics anyway.

#1 Dremel-ed off the welds on the existing studs/bolts.

#2 Reinstalled and held the tire up to get the proper position, then marked the center hole with a marker.

#3 Drilled the stud holes, a bit oversize to account for imprecision.

#4 I had a spare rim laying around since Charla bailed on SnT 2010 so I bolted it up and tightened the nuts in order to get the studs positioned properly. I wish I'd payed better attention to where the new holes would be with respect to the reinforcement. Oh well. I felt like they all came through close enough to the original plate that I didn't need to add more plates. We'll see.

#5 Apply boogers and then hit with rustoleum.

#6 TADA!

WTF?! I thought you would've parted that POS out by now!

:p

Looks good. Like I've said so many times before.... I'm very happy that you adopted him.

nope, those are the old style 33x10.5-15's. It might be because the tires are on a 5.5 rim so they don't bulge out as much. I loath the 9.5

Looks good. I moved the whole plate with the studs. Maybe the plate is different on the later models.

Mine is only an 85, probably no different. I did see the spot welds and consider moving the plate but I didn't want to drill the welds and was lazy. There, I said it, happy now?? :D
