Hi All,

Im running 285/75/16 on my 80 which need replacement, however that size is not available, but 315's are available (BFG) and look so much bigger!

The car has a 2 inch lift and offset rims so should be ok to fit, however I have read posts about re-gearing etc and I dont want to do that or any other mods.

So im wondering should I just hold out for 285 or go 315, would the 315's lower fuel consumption, anthing else, could they cause problems with the gears? (its an auto HDJ80)

I use the car mainly in town, few off road trips

I am in the same situation. My searching here has found about a 50-50 mix of people who say you need to re-gear or don't need to. I will go to 315s for my next tires, but I am not in a hurry, so I don't mind if things are a bit slower on the long hills. I won't re-gear unless I come into a lot of money! If you live somewhere relatively flat, you should be fine. Is your truck turbo 1HD-T? You won't have clearance issues with the 2" lift.

With 2" lift you have the clearance. You'll will want to drop the bump stops a little for 315's With the diesel you should not have to re-gear but it will drop MPG a little and you'll probably notice a little less power on steep grades.

I run 315's & stock gears here in the states in the mountains. Petrol engine and do OK until I attach a trailer. Then I really feel I need lower gears.

no need to re-gear, your MPG's and power will take a slight hit but that is it.
But you are also Diesel as well.
I would get the 315's, would not think twice about it.

Get em. My 80 had 315s on it from the PO. It was a bit sluggish off the line. I have no lift and try fit fine, until the suspension was flexed then they'd rub. If you have the time and money to regear do it. But it's not a crucial thing. I would've stayed with 315s if I found a good deal on em.

Thanks Guys,

I think ill still search for 285's, really dont want to have to re-gear or lose fuel milage and more importantly power!, also for town use 285 might be best

Re-gearing all depends on how embarrassed you feel when you're repeatedly being passed going uphill.

315s aren't hugely larger in circumference; the power loss will be noticeable but it's not like you'll suddenly have a 3FE under the hood.

I have been driving my 80 with 35s and stock gears and it isn't that noticable but I live in flat Dallas. I am changing my gears right now because I blew out a birf and I am rebuilding the axles. If that hadn't happened, I wouldn't have regeared.

If you live in higher altitudes, you might consider regearing.

Hi All,

Ok im thinking of going 315 now, cant get the D load BFG's in 285 size and im thinking heck, just go big!

However anyone out there know the weight of the 315 BFG's, according to my research each tyre should be about 5kg heavier than a 285......

An update,
Fitted the 315's All terrain BFG. Have not noticed much of a change in acceleration nor braking, maybe because its not too much of a jump up from 285's.
Best of all the car looks MONSTER and im hoping for another 5 yrs tyre life

Only worry now is the BIRF's which are already clicking

Congrats, now show us a picture!

I've been running 35s and stock gears for 6 years. Never regretted it.:meh:

Theres not to many vehicles that can fit 35" tires or tyres, (depending on where you live) with just 2" of lift.

I regeared to 4.88's but it wasnt completely necessary. My wife wanted the 80 to be faster off the line.

Wait a minute... What's going on hear?

Ok guys, gona try to post some pics

Above is the difference in tyre size between the 285/75/16 and 315/75/16 , unfortunately dont have many pics yet, but few more below :
