I'm doing a 3 to 4 speed conversion on my '73 FJ and read some posts in FAQ about compatibility. Anyone know if I can retain my 3-sp flywheel and replace everything else (clutch disc, PP, T/O bearing, shift fork) with 4-sp parts? I know I can go with all 3-sp compoments or all 4-sp components, but not sure about keeping the older flywheel. And, any opinions of best source for a clutch kit? How about SOR vs. MAF vs. CoolCruisers? Or, autopartsway.com? Any recommendations for what holds up the best?

You cannot do this.

The flywheels are not the same design.

here's some pics showing the differences for most of the parts---but I only show the new flywheel not the old---rest of the parts are there though

The later diaphragm clutch is "supposed" to be a better design but I really just went with it cause that is the one that came with it in 79. The old clutches seemed to work just fine and last too and the old style flywheel is heavier and favored by some for crawling. I couldnt say if it really makes a diff or not myself-- having not tried both

It is about 400 bucks for all the new toyota stuff including a rear main seal without the flywheel

I got my parts from CDAN on MUD ---they advertise as American Toyota--if you are looking for all Toytota parts

p/ns on the link as well
