My story:

I live in the North Yorkshire area of the UK and bought my cruiser 6-7 years ago.
It is a 1998 VX 4.7 petrol that had already been converted to run on LPG (propane) with a single point injection system (pre-throtle body). The car had covered about 60,000 miles when the conversion was done. The car was very tidy and had covered 110,000 miles when I bought it. I have had all the usual little niggles with the AHC which failed a year into my ownership (I just live with the basic off mode until I can get around to affording a fix). Towards the end of last year I began to notice a gradual drop in power and I had problems with it stalling at junctions on deceleration. A friend tested the compression and found that the readings were well out of spec. I took the car to an engine rebuilders and they confirmed a badly cracked cylinder head (beyond repair) and most of my exhaust valves had radial cracks. The valves are being replaced but a replacement remanufactured cylinder head is proving impossible to find in the UK. My car has now been with the mechanic for 8 months! I know that I could probably buy a new cylinder head from Toyota but this would be outside of my budget (us Yorkshire men have a reputation you know ;)). Well I'm sorry for the length of the story but I can see that there is a vast wealth of knowledge and experience on this forum and I would value your helpful advice especially if you could help me source a cylinder head. My mechanic has tried a few times and an importer from the US he was using gave us hope but twice the heads were faulty and could not be used.

I've been looking through your pictures and reading some of the posts and it has made me want my cruiser back soon. We had a particularly bad winter last year and even though my cruiser was well down on power I managed to pull a few other motorists out of the snow. My other car is a BMW 3 series and you can imagine how that performs in the snow  .....4 months to go!

In hopeful anticipation,

Steve

I can imagine that finding 2UZ-FE Land Cruiser heads in GB would be a little tough. It would be tough even in the US. However... I'm not sure about this, but in theory the heads off the 1st gen Tundra should fit. If so, there should be a more searchable stock in the US. Maybe you could get one (both?) shipped to you.

Do you suppose the LPG was running too lean? Wondering why the failures.

It looks like the US is the best source for remanufactured heads for the 2UZ FE. I notice that there are a couple of shops on ebay based in the US; KH engines and Clearwater Cylinderheads. Has anyone had experience with these?

With regard to the failure of the head and valves, I would say that it looks very likely that there has been excessive heat probably caused by overly lean mixture.
I do not profess to be an expert on internal combustion engines or fuel burning dynamics. Whether the failure was completely down to the LPG conversion or some other factor I don't know. It could have been running lean from a leak in the inlet manifold. I had to get access to the starter 3 years back and that procedure requires the removal of the inlet manifold and an array of hoses and cables, it is just possible that I may have not been as thorough as I should have been when refitting the inlet manifold and caused a leak giving me a lean running engine. I know a good many owners in the UK are running their "Hundys" on LPG with no ill effects, I do not know of anyone running an old single point system (like mine) though. Most people use the newer multipoint sequential systems. Could it be down to my old system? Well maybe but it's been on the vehicle for 70,000 miles and 7 years. I've had a new evaporator and tank solonoid fitted and a few specialist services in that time too and it's always passed it's emmission test every year ;) .

Yep i have had the same prblem, had my V8 converted to LPG at 100k and 160k late 2 cylinders gone due to valve recession...spke to my mechanic and he to belives it was the gas, so now trying to locate new or replacement 2UZ engine!

If you are running it is highly recommended to have the oil injection to keep the valves lubed.
