Hi guys.
Really new to forums infact this is my first ever post so please go easy.
This is a question that should probably be in a Hilux section given the engine I'm talking about but my truck is an lj71 so I'm putting it under 70 series.

What I really want to know is a list of all differences between a 2lt and a 2lte.
Thinking about doing timing belt etc on the 2lte in my truck but it seems to be easier to find kits for the 2lt.
Are they the same in this aspect?

Also what turbo is on the 2lte? Can I use a different one? Is it worth it? Should I just rebuild the one I've got? Does it need to be balanced etc or just throw in new seals and send it?

Unfortunately at this stage she is just a work truck for carting gear around. Doesn't get to see 4wd more than 3 times a year at best and even then it's only a wet paddock for some firewood.
I have heard an intercooler really helps these trucks. And will look at that too. But honestly right now I think the old girl is burning more oil than diesel due to the turbo seals being that rooted.
Cheers in advance guys

Have added a pic of truck, sorry it's the only photo I could find quickly, will try hunt down some others if anyone's interested, but like I said, she's just a workhorse at the moment, no trail beast

Hey there hairydog,
I spent years playing with 4runners and surfs. The 2LT family of engines is slightly confusing, but for your LJ71 it looks to be a 1990 model.
It may be worth checking on a toyota database exactly which kit you need.

The 2.4 diesel is pretty good in factory form, its designed for light duty so dont expect to be easily maintaining 33" at 120kmh on the highway.
There is a guy on youtube (Boosted and Built Garage) that has gone "full retard" on his 2LTE and added water to air intercooler, upgraded everything you can imagine, and puts out about 80kw at the wheels on 24psi (I think he even has a UniChip programmable ECU piggy back).
His next upgrade was to put a VNT turbo on....

In my opinion, the 3 litre 1KZTE (Surf, hilux, hiace, KZ70 cruisers) is far superior and even the most modded 2lte wont even come close to a well sorted 1kz.
The downside to a 1kz is cooling and also complicated ECU/electronic pump. This can be rectified with a mechanical pump conversion for battlefield reliability.

Intercooling and dump pipe is the key to unlocking extra HP and longevity out of these engines.
Secondly is make sure the viscous fan hub is working correctly, and if you need to you can add extra silicone oil to the coupling, and also buy a '10-blade Hilux Fan' for additional cooling of the radiator.

Cheers mate.
Not looking for massive power or anything just good solid reliability, if I was looking for power I really like the idea of a Barra swap but know that will be a phenomenal amount of work.
Any idea where I could find a Toyota database to check?

Hello,

You may want to check @GTSSportCoupe 's threads on the 2L-TE for more information.
