A friend of mine has just purchased a 91 prado. He has a problem starting the 2lte engine when it is warm (at normal operating temperature), yet has no problem starting the 2lte engine when it is cold...

Anyone?

Thanx :beer:

Does it start on all 4cyl instantly when it does start or does one cyl fire and eventually the rest fire one by one?
What kind of smoke is there? A when its running
B when it starts

Starts on all 4 instantly .

A = No smoke.
B = A little black smoke.

May be its the Starter? As it warms up it starts to fail...

?

The lack of smoke and starting on all 4 is good in my books.

Starter motor? maybe if its not cranking strong, or weak battery or bad terminals.

I keep thinking it has no fuel but I cant imagine why as its starts good when cold:confused:

I have a similar problem in my 1hz ( fitted in a range rover classic).
The starting system/batteries are fine, the engine cranks up ok in the
morning. It has power and accelration, but as it gets up to temperature,
the engine seems to loose power as well as has starting problems.

At first I was suspecting the ACSD (the plunger coming out too much), so
I disconnected the water circulation lines to it. But the problem still persists.
So at this point they are telling me that it might be due to weak injectors
and pump. So is this really the problem?

I live in Karachi, Pakistan, where daytime summer temp. is always above
35C. And have to make frequent trip to the thar desert having steep dunes,
so the engine has go be in perfect performing condition. The 1hz is from a
100 series landcruiser. I have retained the 5spd tranny of the range rover.
The engine is mated trough an adapter plate. The rig performs beautifully.
Only this nagging problem seems to have crept up recently.

thanks

Amar ,in your case I would say you have low pump pressure.
I had mine rebuilt when I did an engine swap. The fuel injection shop described a worn pump and it sounded like yours.
Fine when cool but when it gets hot it expands and loses pressure,most noticable when you pull out to overtake a slow vehicle.
I also live in an area where 35c is common
According to the shop and others I spoke to,this pump is particuarly bad for wearing out the piston and head.
A good shop can bench test the pump and give you a figure to prove it is low/good
The shop told me that most need a rebuild aound 250000klms
You might want to do a compression test on the engine before any money is spent as well as check fuel flow ect.
If it were an injector problem it would be having problems all the time,not just when hot.
