Just received my egt sensor and gauge but am still confused where to install it. Was thinking either welding a bung on the blanked out EGR port or going post turbo on the elbow right after the exhaust turbine. Am more keen on having it installed pre turbo but not sure on the location I just mentioned. It seems like the sensor would not be in the exhaust path since the port is a little out (as shown in photo). What do you guys think ?

This is the best spot (right before the turbo). Picture is from Jarrat's build: My LJ78 build thread... Personally, I put my probe in the cast elbow after the turbo. Not as accurate, but is good for a relative measurement.

Yeah I had seen this on Jarrat's build, seems like the best place to put it! But that requires taking off turbo & manifold, something which I don't feel like doing lol. Most probably end up installing it post turbo on the elbow...

I installed mine post turbo for the same reason. Like @GTSSportCoupe said, it isn't as good as pre turbo, but it works fine. Just remember to keep the temps lower by a couple of hundred degrees!

When my engine was stock, I think I could hit 1250F or so maximum (after turbo). Now it only hits 1000F maximum, and it takes way longer to get there. So I figure 250F lower than OEM is good enough for me....

If I had to guess, there is a 200F maximum drop across the turbine with the factory dump pipe. A bigger dump pipe might increase this.

Shocking picture, and possibly controversial, but i went pre-turbo but in the turbo housing itself, the theory was that it i went where Jarrat went that you may not get good airflow being just above where the two flows join. Not sure if it makes a huge difference.

My EGT's seem to sit around the 450-550C range

Similarily with going where the EGR block is you only pick up a single cylinder.

Pre turbo is the only way to go, IMHO, after having a gauge in the dump for a few months, I went pre when I fitted the Gturbo and with a similar tune, the difference is night and day in the responsiveness of the gauge. I would say a few times, I thought I was good looking at post numbers whereas in the same conditions, pre-turbo indicated it was time to ease the right boot a little.

Without taking the turbo off, start drilling on a cold manifold with plenty of grease on the drillbit, then as you think you're about to go through, clean and regrease, and start the engine to blow any shavings out. Grease the tap too and run the engine for the last part and you should be fine.
