I have found 4.4World.com.au good to deal with too...

I got a new one and reused the old one as a test and no problem after 50000 km, a tiny bit of leakage (whine? not dripping) that later stopped and was part of the test I suppose :wrench: some gasket sealer might help if you have damage, also putting it in hot water to get it flexible might help , I think I did that to get it to original shape (not compressed)
The rings on top of the valve cover are also good to replace but they also stopped leaking/whining.
So maybe the valve cover gasket can be reused, don't know how old mine was.

It is discontinued through Toyota and the other sources that have been suggested in the past (i.e. Cruiserparts.net) don't seem to carry them. Any ideas?

You can still get the engine gasket kit through Toyota here in the US market. Comes with VC. Actually comes with every damn gasket and seal you could ever need. Not the cheapest thing but available.

VC gasket by itself is discontinued for the US market only.

I have one available for sale.

The one I got, hehe

Do you guys use any type of sealant in addition to the gasket for a valve cover?

I dont.. it shouldn't be required, and the field service manual doesnt specify anything other than the gasket.

So I bought a valve cover gasket from Australia (4x4 World.com Australia); should be here any day now.

Negative.

The rubber should establish a good seal without the need for any type of goo.

Just don't over-torque the cover nuts.

Here's the gasket on my B-engine valve cover...

I cheat and put a little gasket sealant on the valve cover to keep it attached, makes my life a little easier..
