Howdy!

I took my 2H HJ60 and my dog out for a grocery run to town today and noticed something unusual while warming up.

Right off the bat, the idle was loping. No A/C, no lights on, nothing unusual. It was a rhythmic pulse, and it wasn't threatening to stall or anything, but this is a new behavior. It wasn't particularly hot or cold in the shed - just right in my opinion. The lopey idle went away after a few minutes and things were business as usual.

I've started it twice before from dead cold after installing the lengthened oil pressure relief valve and it didn't do this. I have been putting about a quart of vegetable oil in every tank of fuel for the reported health benefits, and I'm not sure whether it completely mixes, floats on top of, or sinks to the bottom of a tank of diesel.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

I think its what they call "hunting" from low fuel pressure.

whats your alternator voltage like? My voltage regulator is going, and in turn pulsing between 14.3 and 15.6 volts, and causing a pulsing load on the engine.

15.6v is high, cook your battery. But I can not see how the alternator reg shall effect idle as 2h diesels run without power once running. Try it, start your engine and disconnect the battery. (carefully, or use one of those battery connectors with a tap handle)

Don't think the pressure relief valve would change the idle.

I think veg oil pre mixed with diesel would be better than dumping straight at the very least. Veg oil can solidify quite easily, let a jar of it sit outside a while, especially if used oil which has been heated. Once heated, veg oil attracts water, which helps it become margarine.
Also, why not put some veg oil in a jar of diesel and let it sit. What happens?

I collect used veg oil, but take note any steel in it's vicinity has become rusty, even galvanised. All of it has become margarine.

From what I have researched, either it is better to heat it, if straight, before going to your injection pump, or make biodiesel. If you have veg oil solidify in your fuel lines or pump (hope not) it could do what you are describing.

Then, also you would also need to change all fuel line rubber to viton including the o ring on the injection pump front and fuel filler neck. Even better to change to a stainless fuel tank and replace any brass, copper fuel fittings with stainless. Veg oil is extremely caustic and shall eat your normal fuel line rubber fairly quick, encourage abrasion holes and make it jelly like.

Even then, best practice is to purge fuel lines with straight diesel to clean out any veg with a dedicated tank for each fuel.

How long have you played with the veg?

I like the idea of veg, but would only proceed with extreme caution. I do know of a diesel mech who says nothing is wrong with veg oil as long as it is done right. (rare, I have asked several diesel specialist, most swear expletives at the mention of it)
Veg oil is involved, I think a problem is that some folks have not done a thorough journey into it and have spread some misinformation and then count the kilometers with fingers crossed, hoping to save the world. Some with silent major stuff ups which doesn't get posted. Some quietly replace their car without posting.

You really have to thoroughly research veg oil.

It hasn't had a lopey idle since I originally posted this thread. In hindsight, I think I tried starting that day without glowing for laughs, started right up but I was distracted by putting my kayak on the roof and forgot all about what I had done to the point of posting on Mud about it.
