Ok. I am new to the diesel world so sorry for the questions. Why are you not a fan of the 2H engine? I have a 79 fj40 I need the powertrain for. Thought this would be a nice easy fit. I will not off-road this truck and really want a 60 mph rig with good fuel economy. Let me know your thoughts.

Personal preference when they are mounted in a 40 series,I like my 3B's especially with a turbo and intercooler for the snappy response and lighter weight vs the more relaxed 6 cilinder.

This is all personal and many people prefer the 2H over the 3B.

I've owned two 2H's. Both were mated to h41 transmissions and 4:11 gearing. They're super reliable. They have great tourque. But they are sssllllooowww, especially at the top. I drove mine on the interstate once 2.5 hours one way and back in the same day... It was not pleasant. If you regeared to 3:70's, it would be a lot better.

As much as it contradicts with my purist ways, I'm going to source an OM617 with H41 or H55.

I have owned a few Mercedes G wagons in the past with the OM617 and if you think that the 2H is slow be prepared for absolutely no improvement at all,you might want to use a OM603 instead.I had a G350 that was able to get out of it's own way but none of the 5 cilinders.

Having owned a couple TDI's... I just know they spin up quicker compared to my 2Hs. I'm under no illusions that the om617 is fast.

Even a turbo'ed 617?

A turbo one is better but then again if you install a turbo on a 2H it is faster also. The Mercedes six just runs a lot smoother then the 5 and in a big square box like a cruiser or a G you want all the power you can get ;-)

How soon will you have this motor and setup? When will you know which top plate it has. I am very interested if it has the correct top plate. Keep me updated. What kind of fuel economy could I expect on a 79 fj40?

I just want you to look at it and see if the engine has new seals, gaskets, ect... Visual inspection, give me your honest opinion, and I think we will work this out.
Thanks.

The container should arrive around 22 September so a week to 10 days later I will have everything in my shop.

Awesome. I think a 2H with H55 will be a dependable, econonomical choice... Your '79 should have 4:10s. What size tires will you run?

Actually Toyota went to 3.70 rear end gears in 79 here in the U.S.. I have not decided on tire size yet. I have a set of 16" steel split rims I might use on this truck. I bought a rust free 79 fj40 from California with no drivetrain. I'm going to build this as a more reliable daily driver and wanted a dependable engine that had better fuel economy. Since I need an engine, transmission, and transfer case this seemed like a great option verses buying a 2f and rebuilding it.

Yes... I had it backwards... USA FJ40's went 3:70.

So with 3.70 gears and the h55 5-speed what mpg do you think I could expect? What are your thoughts about power? Will this combination drive up a hill or will it need a turbo? I'm talking about interstate hills not off roading hills. I won't do inoffensive, however it would be nice to know I could drive it to Tennessee if I wanted to on a trip.

All I know is that both of mine could do it.... It's just it seemed to be working hard at 60-70 mph... And was very loud at that speed. If you're thinking of travel, I'd spend the extra money and get a factory turbo'ed engine. (Just my opinion)

Just reading other people's threads, seems like you have to strike that balance of:
Turbo/non turbo
Gearing
Tire size
Expectation

Gabe,
The 2H I have for sale was in my 78' 45 with an H55F. It was great with 4:10 gears. It would atain 70-75 mph with no effort. I have a small mountain between my home and town. I could traverse it with no problems at 55-60 mph (the posted speed limit is 50). When I installed 3:70 gears I could no longer maintain speed even after down shifting to 3rd. On flat highways if there were a head wind I had trouble maintaining the speed limit of 70. The truck has 31/10.50 tires. It appears that the gearing combo and tire size takes it out of the power band. I would recommend 4:10 and the 5 speed with the 2H, or start saving for a turbo. Just my 0.02$ worth.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to hold off for a different combo.
