I have an '85 with about 465k and I've had it for a long time. I've probably put 120k on it my self. When I adjust it one direction, I get black smoke starting but if I turn it back so there's no black smoke, I immediately start getting light grey smoke on acceleration. It had a rebuilt motor before I bought it so I don't know the status of where the injector pump came from or the state of the auto timer, injectors, etc.... I tried to time it once and I think I got pretty close. Any ideas on what the grey smoke is? Lacks high end power on the highway. Pretty much have to put a brick on the accelerator pedal anytime I'm heading up any type of hill. Doesn't burn any oil.

I know it's a few years on, but I just thought I'd reply in case you're still having issues.

I'm far from an expert on Diesels, but I know that white smoke is typically unburnt fuel. And if I was getting unburnt fuel on a petrol at high rpm I would advance the timing. I do recall reading about a unit on the 2h timing gears that adjusts the timing. So I would consider the possibility that you have retarded timing or maybe that unit isn't functioning correctly.

If you've solved the issues would you mind posting what you did? I'd be curious to hear about it.

Can anyone tell me how to get the full stop capsule off? Is it a normal right hand thread or am I just having a hard time getting mine off? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you referring to the lock nut? Its a standard right hand thread.. I use a small pin punch in one of the three holes - not easy to get the angle right, but it can be done. The actual fuel screw is also a standard right hand thread (metric fine thread)
