Seems like a never ending story - replaced the head (crack at #3), new radiator, hoses, etc. and now the water pump is spraying antifreeze in the FJ55 . I'm not giving up but need some advice on the water pump replacment. Can I replace the WP w/o removing the radiator or should I just open the whole area up? The water pump is the shorter unit w/o the fan clutch and has the port for the oil cooler.

Ming

Tried search w/o any luck.

yes you can, replace without pulling the rad. Even on a 62 you can......

Ming, it's possible that you've got a leak between the main water pump housing and the steel plate that goes across the back of the water pump. Often times fixing this problem is a simple as removing the water pump, removing the two phillips-head screws that hold the plate to the pump body, and putting a bead of silicone all the way around the edge of the pump body.

Even if you end up putting on a different water pump, you should pull the plate and gasket it yourself. The only thing more annoying than doing the job is doing it twice!

65 - Appreciate you sharing your experience and I'll definately make sure that I seal the back plate as you suggest. My leak seems to originate from the front of the water pump - the wp casting is covered as if the antifreeze was being blown back by the fan. I'll take a quick pick this evening and post it.

Thanks,

Harry

The other thing I have noted from replacing a few water pumps over the years, GO OEM TOYOTA.

I cannot tell you how much closer tolerance the impeller to casting is on the OEM ones. Its a miracle the GMP and others even move water or create any kind of pressure wiht the cheap ass stamped steel impellers they have. The OEM ones have a very nice cast impeller with very close tolerances in comparison. No wonder the FJ62 runs much cooler in hotter weather now.

John, you must have inspector gadget arms to do that waterpump on a 62 with the radiator inplace. It sucked with the radiator out just due to the fact there are a million interferences.

I just got a new 2F water pump for my PS conversion from NAPA and it had TEQ cast right into it. The impeller was a cast one like you mentioned. I felt that the tolerances were good and tight too. I haven't had any problems with water pumps from NAPA -- ever. 2 year warranty.

My experience FWIW...

LOL........nope I got big meat hands............so I had my buddy do it ;)

ya replacing the water pump is a pain with the radiator in tact, it takes around 15 mins to uninstall the radiator, and its well worth the extra room, and the front end can be folded down as i recall to make even more room for my monkey arms

on a 40 yes its no biggy to pul lthe rad, but on a 62 or even a 60 its not nearly as easy.

For certain things (brake/clutch parts, W/P etc..) Napa often sells an Aisin or Toyota part in a napa box. There is no different part number, price, or anything. Its just a chance you play.

Good reasont to buy 3 waterpumps, hope one is a Toyota and return the other two. :D
