I have a new ticking sound coming from the engine - I don't think it's the valves but am going to adjust them anyway. Recently had a new smog pump installed, as well as new carburetor and new intake/exhaust manifold gasket - noise appears to be on driver's side of the engine towards the top. Please have a look/listen and tell me what you think. Thanks!

Good grief there's a lot of ticking going on. I can hear the valve train loud and clear. You might check the rear exhaust bolts and that horribly hard nut to tighten on the EGR valve pipe. The exact name escapes me but the nut is over 1". It sounds like a cylinder issue, so either you have an exhaust leak or you've got something more ominous. Have you had a listen with a mechanic's stethoscope? See if one cylinder is louder than the others?

Sounds like the valves. Do you have plenty of oil in her? Oil pressure ok? I think it might be more than a valve adjustment.

I just re-read your post. Most likely your exhaust. Check all your bolts exhaust manifold bolts. 3-20 in the 36104E FSM says they are 29-36Ft-lbs.
I have a LC with a tick that almost sound like a rod, but when I get the exhaust all tightened up, that tic goes away.

Thanks for the tips - I'll get a stethoscope and look for that EGR bolt - thinking/hoping it's not too ominous as this all started after I had the new smog pump installed a few weeks ago. It didn't make this horrible ticking noise before that.. When I get it sorted I'll post what it was, in case anyone is curious.. and I still welcome more thoughts/ideas from anyone. Thanks.

First thing I thought of was oil - was a little low and I filled it up but still ticking. Oil pressure is good. I think the valves need adjusting regardless and I'm hoping it's an exhaust leak as suggested by rickyrockrat. I'm pretty sure the "ticking" I'm hearing is on top of the valve noise. I recently had the manifold gasket replaced (before the new smog pump).. also when I was looking at the EGR something looked fishy down there.. Thanks!

Since it is a new sound, and they didn't muck with your valves, it's not likely valves - though they sound like they might be a bit loose, they are consistent. I think I found a pipe wrench the best thing for that honkin' nut. I think it's one of the worst things to get to to tighen.

It is difficult to hear the exact tone of the tick but you should also check your air injection rail, if it is still installed. I had a cracked tube in mine years ago that was hard to see and the tick drove me crazy before I finally found it.

You might check your manifold nuts and bolts. I just took my intake and exhaust manifolds off and when I did I found that both of the lower mount bolts were not tight.

Process of elimination:

1. Adjust the valves. They're also making a racket.
2. Rule out the smog pump by waiting until the engine is cold - remove the smog pump belt, (which also drives the water pump) start the engine and listen for a FEW seconds. The water pump will be disabled so don't idle the engine too long.
3. I hear an exhaust leak too but it's not creating that metalic clanking

Interesting that this thread popped up bc I was about to ask about exhaust leaks.

What is it about exhaust leaks that create a mechanical ticking noise??
My 3FE has long had a very distinct tick, my valves are in need of a serious checkup, but this seems separate from the usual clatter.

Not to hijack, but what is the tick?

I've had a very similar "tick" for a couple of years. It goes away completely as the engine warms up. After lots of troubleshooting , I'm down to piston slap or exhaust manifold (tube header) leak.

Thanks to everyone's input.. After wrestling with the beast this afternoon to remove the inner belt (that runs the smog pump and water pump) I'm quite sure my problem is the smog pump. I also ran it with one of the smog pump hoses disconnected (before removing the belt) and could hear a serious racket. Here's the new video - all you can hear now (I think) are the valves - this is how it sounded before the new smog pump was installed..
