Hey gents, I've got my old 2F sitting on the garage floor and instead of getting rid of it, I think it'd be a cool idea to make it into a glass top coffee table. Here is one done with a V8, but we're Toyota nuts, so I want it to be a 2F:

I'm posting to document the work, but also to ask what do you guys think would look good?

I'm thinking block with pistons and crank in it, sitting on a pedestal of some kind, with locking rubber casters so it can roll around and not mess up my hardwood floors any more than they already are. Maybe even a small electrical motor that can turn the crank slowly so non-gearheads that come over can get a quick lesson on how gasoline motors work :D

nice i say go for it.... will post some thoughts as the meander in. but the drive motor is the tits. nice one
always figured id have a garage couch/storage cubby with 3rd row seats and a glass top coffee table on some stock 80 springs :hillbilly:

For the drive motor, using a modified starter is the obvious choice, but how do we slow it down? Will a starter motor run on AC power? If it will, I can use a PWM or rheostat to modify input voltage to modify motor speed.

Guy I used to know did the drive motor thing with a 454 on a coffee table.... i'll try to find his info for you.

I don't think i've seen an inline motor that tall as a table before... could be pretty cool.

That info would be excellent, thanks man!

I was looking at it today and without the head or oil pan, it should be pretty damn close to perfect height for a coffee table.

I like the idea, looking forward to see where you go with it.

minus the turf shag carpet, pretty SWEET!!!

How will kids hold up on the glass edges just saying. Looks nice.

Its quite simple to get glass cut with rounded edges but since he doesn't have kids the point it moot.

That's badass! My envisioned design with the rotating assembly would be a bit taller than that, but exactly what I'm thinking.

Duh leucas pucas. Martin posted that right?

Can't have sharp edges or non-tempered glass as Leucas or drunk house users ( myself included ) might get injured. Broken glass is not something I like to eff with, especially such a large sheet where I like to walk bare-footed.

Binswanger Glass Co. has a lot of stores all over. They cut my hardtop glass for me and they specialize in auto and home (tables/mirrors/etc). theyll cut any shape....

Good to know, thank you sir!

Why wait? Seems like it's more of a safety issue if we wait also... Any table will do or better yet, a giant cable spool!
