I've finally got my newly acquired 81 BJ44 sorted. It had sat and been poorly maintained in Japan for many years. Aside from general fluid and filter maintenance, I replaced the water pump and radiator, and installed a thermostat as previous owner had removed. Diesel mechanic confirmed compression and replaced diaphragm and said it's spinning like a top.

With this said, I installed a Bosch direct read temperature gauge before the thermostat, and it runs consistently at 140-150 degrees. When it turns off it will go to 160 degrees... and on restart immediately drops back down.

Is this normal operating temperature? Most of my driving is city and highway trips less than 25 miles and never over 50mph... as that's pretty much top speed.

Interested to hear others experience with the 2B.

Sounds on the low side for B/H series engine but nothing to worry about, it's also normal for the temperature to go up after the engine shuts down.

Your cooling system sounds like its in good condition! Have you done a nice solid hill climb in it yet - that's the acid test for a cooling system.

I haven't but now that's it running and roadworthy she'll be out through the paces and I'll report back on how it looks in the mountains.

UPDATE: I've driven the 2B all summer in 90-100 Georgia summer temps, in start/stop city traffic and on hills, and I have never cracked 160 degrees.
