the chevy 292 is mounted to the stock 3speed+tcase from the cruiser with 5 motor mounts, with one of them doubling as a transmission mount (the only transmission mount by the way) on the passenger side. it goes without saying that i've got some reworking ahead of me.

anyone who is familiar with the 292: it should only have two motor mounts correct? one on either side of the block which are centered front and back on the motor. i'm looking for conformation here.

pics i've found online seem to indicate that i am assuming correctly about the number and location of the mounts.

thanks guys.

Howdy! I think the 292 (dump truck 6) usually was mounted with one motor mount on each side, and then it was hooked up to a cast iron bell housing that had mounting pads bolted to the bottom with 2 bolts each. I think I still have one of the bells sitting here. If there is a fifth mount, it is probably custom made. John

If the mounts fo a 292 are the same for the 250 then here is a pic of one that I had. The frame side of the mount ended up fitting with a SBC too. FWIW I think the block was a 69 Suburban.

each one of the many mounts on this motor use a different mount&bushing except for the two (what i think should be the) originals. i think the P/O was possibly an idiot.

thanks for the pics.

I have a 292 still bolted up to a NP465 tranny setting here and it has the two block mounts and the single mounting location on the back end of the tranny, nothing on the bellhousing. It is apparently one of the later ones made since it has the big base dizzy (HEI? cap is broken) and the starter bolts going verticle up into the block instead of into the bellhousing like the older ones did.

If you look at the pics of Bret's 250 it apparently has the three bolt motor mounting pattern to the block like mine. However, the mounts that were on mine look like the stock ones found on 60's/70's era GM V8 rigs. The 292 drivers side motor mount is in the same location as Bret's 250, but the passenger side mount on the 292 is in a different location. Look at Bret's second pic and locate the fuel pump and the motor mount. The 292 flips the location of the fuel pump and the motor mount so that the two motor mounts are not directly opposite each other like all the rest of the GM I-6 motors.

Don

under closer inspeaction, the passenter side mount is forward of center, and the fuel pump is in the center. on the driver side it is centered. this sucks.

Don't you just love POs?

your first pic looks just like what i am dealing with, but it was severely broken. in the interest of time we're looking for a universal system as a replacement.

like this one from man-a-fre

the 292 also mounts with a triangle pattern, but i have no idea of the 3 bolts are spaced the same as they would be on a sbc.

EDIT:

i'm thinking something like this to come up with new trans mounts:

It's been fun seeing how not to do something, the 292 is mine, rusmannx is the engineer.

The 292 going into my cruiser is out of an '84 Chevy 3500.

you're picture is good, but you motor mount is weird and does not help me.

I don't have the bellhousing either so am not sure if there are mounts on the side like the landcruiser. I am going to fabricate my own mounts anyway but sorry the pic didn't help I wasn't sure but figured I'd post it anyway. Good luck with it.

The 292 is not mounted off the bellhousing like the F/2F is. The rear mount is on the tranny, either the SM420 or 465.

well i appreciate your picture anyway. are you going to take yours down for cleaning/paint? Ox is thinking of doing it with this one..... if we have time I guess.

so can anyone comment on whether or not a sbc universal mount will bolt to this block?

I am going to rebuild it. Probably have the shop balance the internals. Then paint it nice and pretty. I am mounting a TH400/NP205 to it in place of the SM465 tranny. Unfortunately I am waiting to tear everything down because we may be selling and moving out of state so I haven't started anything except collect parts. I need a bigger shop too so I will just have to be patient for now. I don't believe that kit will bolt up to the 292. Last time I check Advance Adapters didn't make a conversion kit but said since there are many similarities to the original it shouldn't be to hard to make something. I know there are some other cruisers out there with the 292. I emailed a guy a year or so ago who had one in his FJ45 P/U and loved it.

I took out a Chev 250 and put in a 292.
If i remember correctly all I had do was move the right front motor mount.

i realized yesterday that it isn't going to work because of the angle. i'm going to have to make my own, which isn't a big deal but i would have rather had Ox spend the money and save myself a few hours of work. we're way behind on his rig.

oh well. thanks guys.

and keep us updated mag!

The mounts are vertical on the I-6 that is the adapter you see in my 250 picture. They looked like stamped steel and I had to weld one back together. I can look if I still have them somewhere.

I will and you do the same.

mine are probably the same. they are stamped steel but cracked and have been previously welded. they suck.
