Does anyone have any experience running chains on a stock height rig with 285/75/16 tires? Is there enough clearance?
I just ordered (after much deliberation) a set of 285 Discoverer S/T tires and now I'm thinking about getting some RUD Grip chains. I have OME 861/862 springs so I probably have a bit more clearance than factory springs. Any input would be appreciated!

No sweat. There is plenty of room to run chains on both ends. Chains on an 80 changes the fear of ice to fear of only the other cars on ice.

I'm looking at the same proposition as Cherry LC - I have a stock suspension and just put on some 285/75's and I'm looking to run chains in the future. I like the 861/862 springs and want to put them on in the near future.

Has anyone else had experience with this lift / tire combo and chains? Thanks.

I'm on this too. I've got stock suspension + 285's and about to do 861/862 springs. I don't see any reason why the chains would'nt clear

Chains on the back won't fit if you have much weight in the car, front is great.
I just chain up the front anyhow, never had a problem, ice, snow, drives like a landcruiser.

Bump - anyone tried this out yet?

I have OME medium 2.5" lift and use chains but only on the front in deep snow while wheeling. No rubbing.

I would like to get a second set of chains for the rear but I don't think it would improve deep snow wheeling. With just front chains and lockers you can get in deep enough snow that you bottom out on. Rear chains would not of helped much. It would help on steep icy trails. Wish I had 4 chains one time when elk hunting. The trail was steep and solid ice.

I used to run my 315s on stock springs. Not OME low lift like you have, but factory springs. I only had minor rubbing on the left front flare when I hit those steep driveways at speed, or those big speedbumps at the mall. Rears only rubbed when fully flexed out on the trail.

With 285s and low lift springs you should be fine unless you're heavily loaded, or fully flexed out on the trail. Be certain to install your chains properly and ensure that there is no slack to flail around.

I'm now running 850-860 and heavy truck chains fit fine in the back as long as there is no slack and they're not flailing. My 'diamond' chains with the automatic ratcheting slack adjusters fit fine front and rear. 35" tires, medium lift.

Did you run the 315s at stock height with chains?

Did you run the 315s at stock height with chains?

Nope. That would be silly to try.

But all said, my 315s are 34.6" dia and your 285s are about 33" so you have 1.6" dia or about 3/4" to fit your chains and be the same overall diameter as my 315s. Plus you're running a low height lift, with stiffer springs than my old stockers.

Should work fine until you hit a big bump at speed, or articulate the suspension all the way.
