I know that tire fitment has been beat to death, but I can't find a definitive answer on this size here, on FB, or on the Wiki.

I would like to upsize from the stock 265/65/R17. However, I want to run stock rims (at stock offset, so no spacers) and use the stock spare location. My understanding is that 285/70/R17 needs a lower offset and a BMC to avoid rubbing. Depending on the make (and suspension, and apparently, luck), the stock spare location may not work with 285s, also. I'd like to avoid that.

I know the largest tire without *any* modification is 265/70/R17, and I use that size for my winter tires, but if a 275/70 is only a fender liner trim, or similar, I'm interested. I not willing to buy new rims to clear the UCAs, then chop the body mount to deal with increased scrub radius, and get a rear tire carrier to carry a spare just to run 285s (yet).

TLDR: If the largest tire that fits without any mod is 265/70, what mods are needed to run 275/70?

I feel that the max diameter of the spare well is 32.2” based on how much room is left on mine (non-kdss). I have a never used fully inflated 255/75R17 BFG KM2 32.1” by 10” tire as my spare even though I run 285s.

So, 275/70R17s per tire calculators is 32.2”x10.8” and should fit snuggly in the spare location non-kdss.

In terms of the wheel wells, I’ve only read on this forum that some people have rubbing on the running board area and liners with 275/70R17 but no BMC

But I’m no authority on 275s since I’ve never run them sizes, so somebody stock with 275s needs to chime in.

Oh one more thing, I assume that you ruled out running 255/75R17s, right?

If I were starting stock on a new GX470 and wanted to keep my mods to a minimum, but wanted better tires...then the 255s would be at the top of my list.

I'll take a closer look at the 255s.

I haven't ruled out anything, but I am trying to prioritize my budget toward camping comforts first. I've been out playing on some trails lately on the weekends (my daughter thinks the bouncing and rocking are hilarious), and I'm really just convincing myself how capable the truck is before any more mechanical mods.

If I take an honest look at what holds me back from getting out more, it isn't tire size or suspension articulation, it's convincing my wife to come with me and bring our almost-2-year-old. For that reason, I'm looking at options for my next set of tires (which I'll need soon anyway) that allow me to allocate budget to sleeping gear/cooking setups. I'd rather go camping every other weekend with my family than tackle bigger trails once a year. For example, a fridge would drastically help my odds of getting them out without a ton of advance planning.

And thank you, that was my understanding of the fitment. I have no running boards, so if all I needed to run 275s was a heat gun and/or trim to the liner, that'd be great, but I'll add 255s to the short list. It'll probably just come down to whatever deal I can get when these Cooper AT3s kick the bucket.

I have 285/70r17 with stock rims on mine and did not do a BMC. I have SPC UCA's and a mild lift. It seems that they rub ever so slightly on my front sway bar but I have never heard anything like lugs dragging on it so I am not concerned. I cannot fit that size spare in the stock location as I dont think it is a viable option to store an un-inflated tire as a spare.

Diameter gives you more contact patch gain than width with tires. I would consider 255's if you are keeping things to a minimum for now. I suggest you do suspension last so you can figure out what you want to do with it and how to maximize it. It is super capable in stock and mild trim.

As for the 2 year old, I have a 3 year old and she has not gone with us yet (stays home with mom). The wheeling isnt the setback for us, it is the overnight primitive camping. At 4 she will start going with us and will have a blast I am sure.

My wife works weekends right now, so anytime I go out is either with just my daughter in the back seat or a family holiday. Everyone has a different situation, I guess!

It sounds like 255s would be a great option for me.

Thanks for starting this thread. I’ve had the same questions and didn’t want to get called out for not searching well enough! I’m curious how much space a 0 degree offset would buy you on aftermarket rims. I’m guessing any gains would be erased by any increase in width

The thing with changing the back spacing or adding spacers is that although it moves the tire away from the suspension parts, it creates a larger arc for the tire when steering. This larger arc means that the tires are more into the body panels when steering, such as the bumper and fender also the BM. Depending how much you change and tire size, the tire can interfere with the pinch weld on the fender/footwell. Additionally, it changes the scrub radius and increases the leverage on the wheel bearing causing premature wear.

I've run 255's on stock suspension and wheels; and 255's and 275's with a very mild lift - initially maybe 3/4" over stock, now closer to 2" - on stock GX wheels, and on 2014 4R Trail wheels (sorry I don't know offset/backspacing). In all configurations, I only experienced rubbing of the front lower inner fenderwell covers - primarily at the very bottom. This is easily remedied, of course.

I kept a 255 spare while running the 275's since they're effectively the same height, and the 255 fits easily.

Frankly I have no idea how much additional rubbing 275's on stock suspension and wheels would produce... if any. If your tire shop would mount 2 up front, put the truck on the ground and let you go lock-to-lock on steering, you'll have a definitive answer.

Most all terrain and some mild MT should fit with no modification with OEM +25 wheels. Shoulder design of the tire would make the difference. If you put tire that have big lugs like super swamper it would definelty rub.

@Jstawgn What tire size did you put in calculator? My tire calculator says a 275/70R17 is 32.2”x10.8” not 10.4”

@HomersCanyonero The offset calculator does not tranfer the tire from tire calculator. I accidentally left previous size 265/70R18 in that calculation.

Yeah, that’s one of the benefits of getting 255/75R17s....lots of availability from Jeeps

Well, I picked up some 255 KO2s today based off of this thread, so thanks again for initiating OP. I got a steal on some Rubicon take-offs

That’s great to know. Here in Salt Lake, I’m sure there are a ton of Rubie takeoffs for the taking. I’ll look into those. Sounds like whatever deal I get, any of these should work for me.
