255/85/16's on 8 inch wheels?

I scored a set of OEM 80 series steel wheels and want to put my 255/85/16 KM2's on them.. The wheels are 8 inches wide. Will this be ok? I have heard that skinnier wheels are preferable for these tires..

If they are too wide is it possible to get a machine shop to cut and weld them to make them narrower or is that not advisable?

They are killer wheels and super strong so am keen to use them for my 60..

BFGoodrich's web site lists the acceptable wheel width range for that tire at 6.5 to 8". So you are clear to run those wheels.

For metric sizes, the first number is the section width (not tread width) in millimeters. Divide by 25.4 to get inches.
The second number is the aspect ratio, basically how tall the sidewall is in relation to the section width.
The last number is obviously the rim diameter.

So, to get the overall size, in this case it's as follows:

Section width = 255/25.4 = 10 inches wide

Sidewall height = 10*0.85 = 8.5 inches tall

Overall height = Rim dia + sidewall height*2 = 16+(8.5*2) = 33 inches.

Those 80 series wheels turned out to be a major PITA klinetime.. I had to get spacers made and then I had some bad rubbing so I actually called it a day witrh them and have gone back to my original wheels and fitted some 285's that I had bought earlier.. I m currently looking for a decent 6 or 7 inch wheel to mount the 255's on as i feel they didn't look right on an 8 inch wheel.. kinda bulging slightly if that makes any sense..
 
Hey no problem, sorry they didn't work out for you. I'll keep in mind that 8" wheels aren't the best for 255/85/16. Most tire manufacturers recommend 6.5"-8" wheel. 7" will be a good compromise :)
 
I've always run my 255's on 16x7 wheels. Most of the Tacoma/mini-truck OEM wheels are 16x7 if you can find something that would work for you. The hub and bolt pattern is the same, but you might need spacers to help with backspacing.
 
I plan on ordering some custom wheels from Summit when the time comes. 16x7 white wagons from US Wheel for $70 each. I'll probably ask for 3" backspacing. That is the best route because I don't like wheel spacers. Especially if there is a reasonable route to avoid them.

Trock, Summit does ship internationally. May be an option for you :)
 
Thanks Klinetime I'll check them out.. On thing I can say is that those Toyota factory 80 steel wheels are super frikken heavy! My truck feels so responsive since I put the lighter wheels back on, despite the wider 285's..
