Well, if I find an older cheap 12 V winch I just might try it on 24 V system a couple of times - just to experiment. But there is now way in hell I would be counting on it in the bush by myself. I am still waiting to see a post from Wayne if he actually did use a 12 on his 24 or if he was just telling a good story.

it's a good story and a true one ;) and it's what i would be doing right now if it was not for the fact that i got a 24v winch.....

:flipoff2:

Not sure if it would be the same but in the old days we would change the older 6volt vehicles(tractors, jeeps, farm trucks) over to 12volts(coil,ballast resistor, etc.) but we would leave the original 6volt starter as they were supposed to be heavier wound. I never recall burning one up. They would crank like a champ.

Sheesh,

All i wanna do is get RID of my 24V winch for a 12V one. . .

Warn X8000i 24V rebuilt and working great!

gimmie your 12V 8000+lbs winch!

When I get money for a used 12 V winch I will PM you before I try it on 24 V. Right now I am just dreaming unless one drops into my hands.:D

Last word on a 12 V winch on 24 V

:shotts: Okay this subject is just about dead so here the last nail.

I got a reply from my friend who is the chief electrical engineer running the WAC Bennett Dam and who is also an avid wheeler on running a 12 V winch on a 24 V system:

" would really hesitate on running your 12 volt winch on 24Volts. This will most likely kill it. The motor is likely series wound and it is definitely not a healthy thing to do for it. Another thing is the safety aspect. The winch will be putting out way more horsepower at the higher voltage. If you snag the hook or really bog the truck down you’ll exceed the capabilites of the winch and most likely break something in the gearbox or motor. DC motors can literally twist the shafts off if you hit them with enough power. If I were you I would install a hydraulic winch (see milemarker winches) on it. They kick and use only your power steering pump for motivational power."

So ummmm I guess I'll be saving for that 24 V, PTO or Hydraulic Winch. Now, to decide on which of the three are the best for me? But that's another thread ...
