I need some help guys. My cruiser from japan for some reason has 24 volt headlights. I was under the assumption that all cruisers had 12 volt headlights. Wrong. If you guys know where to get lights from that info would be great. The headlights are H4 type also 9003's would work.It is and hj61 1986 model .

Burger, where are you? I just changed over the lens to LHD Bosch H4's, and put new bulbs in at the same time. Got them all from Lordco (BC Cdn). I think the bulbs were Bosch as well. Something like $12.50 per bulb comes to mind.

If there is no Lordco near you, any good auto parts store that carries Bosch should be able to get them through their suppliers.

Oh...and the Cdn Spec 24V cruisers came with 12V headlights. Something to do with Cdn DOT regs of the day I've heard, but have not been able to confirm. IFAIK the 24V cruisers that went around the world got 24V headlights. Special eh?

I'm in north vancouver. So you greg were able to get 24 volt replacement lights at lordco. I found a pair at lordco as well but was looking to get a set that was brighter. Does your truck also have 24 volt lights(obviously an import). ???

Yes...BJ74

And they were Hella bulbs, #78160. 70/75W. Ordered, and had them the next day. SBQ7 for the H4 lens change over so your lights are pointed the right way for around here.

I know that my '87 HJ60 has 12 volt head lights. Everything else is 24 volt.

The headlamps are indeed 12 V; the left one draws power from the left battery and the right from the right (I'm not making this up). This keeps the draw even, critical in 24 V systems. Do not let one light burn out, however, as this will cause problems elsewhere.

I don't believe this is correct, based on the fact that you would then need 2 12v taps, one for each battery. Our trucks have only the tap on the first battery.

Yes, it is correct, and there are two taps...

My BJ40 (24V with 12V headlights), one time the wires corroded off the positive terminal on the high battery (the connection to the rest of the truck), I still had one headlight, there were NO other electrics, so that, along with studying the FSM, leads me to believe that CDN spec 40s draw from each battery for each headlight. The tap off the negative terminal provides the 12V power for the left headlight and it also acts as a ground for the right headlight so it gets only 12V from the high battery (the left hand battery). My memory being what it is and this having happened well over 20 years ago, I could be wrong as to which headlight is powered by which battery but I seem to remember being suprised by the fact that with the positive being disconnected from the left hand battery it was the left hand headlight that still worked.
