a guy I know asked me this yesterday.

His son has a 87 mini with a 22RE-T(turbo) can he swap a 22RE(out of a 94) in its place without much hassle?

my guess was yes, but he would prolly need the 22re computer and a few other items.

thoughts?

John

thanks. While at the dealer yesterday we kinda came to the same conclusion, the header pipe will prolly have to be swaped or modified becuase of the stock turbo set up. Don't even think the computer will need to be swaped out, the sensorrs seem to be the same part #'s for both motors.

I believe in 92 or 93 toyota started putting knock sensors on 22re's. So it would be good to get the harness and computer from the donor truck. I had an 87 turbo pickup a long time ago. Really cool rig. The turbo trucks had a beefier trans too, but I don't think there will be any differences in the clutch/flywheel department. I used to have a complete engine/harness/computer from an 86 turbo pickup with 55k on it that I gave away to a guy who was going to put it in an old celica. I'm still kicking myself on that one. Would have been a nice swap for my 89 pickup.

The two wiring harnesses may not be just plug-and-play. My brother put a 22RE from an '89 4runner into his '83 pickup. After trying to cut&splice the '89 engine harness into the '83 body/dash harness he realized he cut some important stuff and didn't want to trace all the problems. He got an engine harness out of an '87 pickup and it didn't work. It was a few years ago now, but I think it had to do with either the style of the plugs that go into the EFI computer, or the way that the computer actuated the injectors (I mean what kind of signal the computer sent). He's away in Texas right now, but I'll ask him what the different years were like in terms of swapability. I remember that 1989 was somesort of cut-off / changover year with respect to some detail in the EFI controls.

cheers,
Steve

injectors have a different connectors, so the wiring harness will have to be swapped as well.

Why make the swap?
